Thermo Fisher Scientific Introduces an Electronic Personal Dosimeter Designed with Particular Customer Needs in Mind

OAKWOOD VILLAGE, Ohio - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, has introduced the Thermo Scientific EPD-G, a cost-effective, electronic personal dosimeter, engineered to meet specific customer requirements and preferences for measuring workers' gamma radiation exposure. The new dosimeter is designed to be worn by personnel wherever gamma radiation is present and could pose a health threat, such as nuclear power plants, government agencies, medical facilities and research laboratories.

The new EPD-G is a robust product
The EPD-G is the gamma-only variant of the original Thermo Scientific beta/gamma electronic personal dosimeter Mk2+, incorporating the same design and performance standards but without beta detection and no beta window, making for a rugged, lightweight unit that is superior in performance to other gamma-only units on the market.

With an easy-to-read LCD screen, featuring an optional backlight and a loud configurable audible alarm, the EPD-G's display and functions are controlled by an easy-to-use single button on the front of the unit that is recessed to prevent inadvertent operation. The unit is powered by a single AA battery, either 1.5V alkaline or for maximum battery life, 3.6V lithium Thionyl chloride.

Simple to use
Because the Thermo Scientific EPD-G is suitable for use where there is no requirement for beta detection and measurement, customers do not have to be concerned with additional functions that have no relevance to their work. "The EPD-G is based on the proven performance history of the EPD Mk2, tested by the IAEA and allowed for use as dose of record in the United Kingdom," said Iuliana Nita, global product line manager, dosimetry. "The new EPD-G loses nothing in gamma performance, retaining all of the advanced technology that our other personal dosimetry products have but without beta capability, which many customers do not require."
