Students from Walker Career Center win trip to Florida
Phoenix Contact names KA+O Storage Inventory System 2016 Nanoline Contest winner
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – A team from Walker Career Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, has won a trip to Orlando, Fla., in Phoenix Contact’s Nanoline Contest. The company announced the winner on Saturday, February 20, to kick off its National Engineers Week celebration.
The students developed a “Kitchen Assistant and Organizer: KA+O” (Pronounced “Kay-Toh”). The purpose of this device is to serve as an accessible and automated food storage and inventory system for areas with limited space. The Nanoline PLC industrial controller is used to manage the inventory, as well as to control the device’s movable parts along with an iPad app that will collect inventory data from the Nano across the Internet.
Team members – Dawson Willis, Connor Hough, David Alba-Lopez, Christopher Weaver, Kayla Hasseld, and Michelle Coe, along with team mentor James Hanson, Jr. – will travel to Orlando, Fla., in June. The trip will incorporate fun and educational activities at area attractions, such as Walt Disney World and Cape Canaveral. This is the second time a WCC team has won the Nanoline Contest.
Thirty-three teams registered for this year’s competition at the regional level, and nine teams from Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Indiana qualified to compete in Saturday’s national contest. A team from Benton Central Junior-Senior High School in Oxford, Ind., won second place, and Lower Dauphin High School, Hummelstown, Pa., took third.
Teams were also honored for excellence in the following categories:
• Excellence in Craftsmanship: Benton Central
• Excellence in Engineering: Early College EAST High School (Havelock, N.C.)
• Excellence in Teamwork: Eagle View Middle School (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)
• Excellence in Communication: Walker Career Center
• Entrepreneurial Excellence: Academic Magnet High School (North Charleston, S.C.)
The contest is part of Phoenix Contact’s National Engineers Week celebration. National Engineers Week (Feb. 21-27) recognizes engineers for their contributions to society and also serves as a catalyst for outreach. Phoenix Contact is recognizing its engineers at awards dinners in Pennsylvania and Michigan. In addition, several engineer employees are sharing their love of engineering by teaching sixth-grade science class at nearby Middletown Area Middle School, February 23-26.
