SPE to Host North American Counterpart to Pinfa, the European Association of Producers of Non-Halogenated Flame Retardants

With Support from SPE, pinfa North America Will Develop Membership and Promulgate Activities Focusing on Exchange of Information and Technology

BOSTON, MA, U.S.A. The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and member companies of pinfa, the Phosphorus, Inorganic and Nitrogen Flame Retardants Association, announced today an agreement for SPE to host pinfa in North America.

pinfa represents manufacturers and users of the three major technologies for non-halogenated flame retardants. Its members have a shared vision to continuously improve the environmental and health profile of their flame retardant products, and offer innovative solutions for sustainable fire safety. pinfa is a sector group of the European Chemical Industry Council, Cefic.

SPE has presented new technology forums on non-halogenated flame retardants at ANTEC for the last several years, and SPE members have now started the process to form a Special Interest Group within SPE dedicated to this important technology.

Under the terms disclosed, SPE will host the North American counterpart to the European-based pinfa at Cefic. SPE will provide services to help pinfa North America establish a robust membership and activities in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and host its North American corporate office. pinfa North America is focused on information and technology exchange, which is fully in line with SPE's mission and interests, noted Susan Oderwald, SPE executive director.

"SPE is looking forward to working with pinfa North America as we more formally develop activities, such as conferencing, around non-halogenated flame retardants," said Oderwald.

pinfa board member Mark Lebel of FRX Polymers said, "Between the work of SPE's New Technology Committee and its emerging Special Interest Group, we believe that a close working relationship with SPE makes good sense for both organizations, and are looking forward to working with SPE to develop a presence here in North America."

pinfa held special sessions at ANTEC on Wednesday, May 4 at the Hynes Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
