Sonobond Ultrasonics Will Exhibit Two Examples of Its Innovative Assembly Equipment at the Assembly & Automation Technology Expo in Chicago

The Dual Head SpliceRite(TM) Ultrasonic Wire Splicer and the SeamMaster(TM) High Profile Bonder will be on display at Booth #1208 in the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, September 28-30, 2010.

WEST CHESTER, Pennsylvania, August 4, 2010 - Melissa Alleman, Vice President of Sonobond Ultrasonics, announced today that the company will be exhibiting its Dual Head SpliceRite(TM) Ultrasonic Wire Splicer and its SeamMaster(TM) High Profile Ultrasonic Bonder at the Assembly & Automation Technology Expo in Chicago, September 28-30. The two units can be seen at Booth #1208 in the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.

Sonobond's Technological Leadership

In making her announcement, Ms. Alleman said, "We view this important show as an opportunity to demonstrate two prime examples of Sonobond's leadership in the development of innovative ultrasonic technology for assembly applications. For example, our Dual Head SpliceRite(TM) represents a major breakthrough in fast, dependable wire splicing. The unit can handle wire bundles with cross-sectional areas of up to 100 square millimeters. It is especially suitable for assembling the heavy cables used for cars, trucks, and industrial machinery.

"The other machine we will be exhibiting is our SeamMaster(TM) High Profile Ultrasonic Bonder. It seals, seams, and trims nonwoven and synthetic fabrics-including bulky materials-in one quick, reliable step. This unit has several important applications, including filtration assembly. Visitors to Sonobond's booth will be able to see for themselves why these two units are at the forefront of ultrasonic welding and bonding technology in their respective areas."

Dependable Wire Splicing with Sonobond's Dual Head SpliceRite(TM)

As its name implies, Sonobond's Dual Head SpliceRite(TM) Ultrasonic Wire Splicer has two welding heads, one on each side of the weld area. As a result, the unit can comfortably and reliably weld wire bundles with cross-sectional areas of up to 100 square millimeters. It also has the ability to accommodate tinned or oxidized wires that might otherwise stall the welding process. Non-ferrous similar and dissimilar metals can be welded with repeated accuracy. The welds produced have excellent conductivity. No other ultrasonic welder can accomplish all this in a single pulse.

In commenting on the use of ultrasonic technology for metal welding, Vice President Alleman explained, "Manufacturers are discovering that this process offers significant advantages. It creates solid-state metallurgical bonds without the need for filler materials or for clipping, soldering, crimping, or dipping. Ultrasonic metal welding is an environmentally-friendly, cost-effective process that produces no waste. It also consumes minimal energy."

Sonobond's Wedge-Reed System Delivers Superior Results

Like all Sonobond metal spot welders, the Dual Head SpliceRite(TM) uses the patented Wedge-Reed system. This system combines high vibratory force with low amplitude coupling. During the welding process, high frequency ultrasonic energy is directed via the welding tip to the surface between the metals to be bonded. Vibratory energy disperses the oxides and surface films, creating a true metallurgical bond.

The Dual Head SpliceRite(TM) features heat-treated, tool steel taper lock tips that can last for 100,000 welds or more. These are designed for quick tooling changes and fool-proof placement. The unit has a 3,500-watt power supply and a microprocessor controller that stores and recalls up to 250 jobs. Welds can be controlled by height, by energy, or by time. The entire process is fast and very dependable.

Ultrasonic "Sewing" with the SeamMaster(TM) Series

The other unit to be exhibited in Chicago will be the SeamMaster(TM) High Profile Ultrasonic Bonder. Sonobond's series of SeamMaster(TM) ultrasonic bonders is similar in appearance and operation to traditional sewing machines. However, these units use no thread, glue, or other consumables. Instead, they seal, "sew," and trim nonwoven and synthetic fabrics with ultrasonic vibrations. As a result, manufacturers and assemblers no longer need to be concerned about stitch holes or glue gaps. Fraying and/or unraveling of bonded edges and seams are also virtually eliminated.

The SeamMaster(TM) High Profile Bonder and other SeamMaster(TM) units save time and money by performing several labor-intensive operations in one pass. They operate four times faster than conventional sewing machines and up to ten times faster than. adhesive methods. Because of this, they are frequently used in the assembly of filters and protective products, including medical disposables that must comply with OSHA regulations for barrier seams. A variety of interchangeable pattern rollers are available for slitting, embossing, and "stitching." Other products produced with this technology include window shades, draperies, garments, blankets, awnings, automotive seats and carpets, athletic accessories, banners, safety garments, ballistic vests, aviation insulation panels, netting, and ribbons.

Ideal for a Variety of Specialized Applications

The machine to be exhibited at the Expo, the SeamMaster(TM) High Profile Ultrasonic Bonder, has a higher clearance between the wheel and horn than do Sonobond's other SeamMaster(TM) units. This makes it ideal for hand-guided applications with tight tolerances and for working around curves. The unit is especially useful for specialized applications in the textile, apparel, and engineered fabrics industries, and a special fixture is available for sewing pleated filters. The machine can also be easily integrated into production lines as a modular unit.

A Popular Choice with Body Armor Manufacturers

Sonobond's SeamMaster(TM) High Profile Ultrasonic Bonder is very important to companies that manufacture ballistic vests. It is used to seal the outer nylon shell of the body armor with the ballistic-resistant materials inside. The results have been so dependable that an increasing number of manufacturers rely on this unit to help them comply with the latest National Institute of Justice (NIJ) submersion standards (NIJ 0101.06). These recently revised, more stringent standards require a leak-tight seam, even after full immersion in water for 30 minutes. Prior to this, NIJ standards only required protection from a spray shower.

An Invitation to Expo Attendees

In looking ahead to Sonobond's participation in the Assembly & Automation Technology Expo in September, Vice President Alleman says, "We're excited about exhibiting these two outstanding machines. So I encourage attendees to visit us at Booth #1208 to see the units for themselves. We'll be happy to answer questions relating to their particular bonding or welding requirements. It's also important to remember that these machines are just two examples of the many innovative units Sonobond Ultrasonics has to offer. Every single day, we demonstrate our technological expertise by finding practical, cost-effective solutions to the specific welding and bonding needs of manufacturers and assemblers across a broad spectrum of industries. We're ready to help other companies in the same way."

Half-Century of Leadership

Sonobond Ultrasonics has been a respected, worldwide leader in the application of ultrasonic welding and bonding technology since 1960. In that year, the company-then known as Aeroprojects-received the first patent ever awarded for ultrasonic metal welding. In the years since then, Sonobond has earned an outstanding reputation for its pioneering work and quality-engineered products. The company currently manufactures a complete line of ultrasonic bonding and welding equipment for a wide variety of customers in the filtration, electrical, automotive, appliance, solar, aerospace, medical, body armor, and apparel industries. Sonobond equipment is easy to operate and requires only minimal training. In addition, the company backs its products with exceptional technical support and outstanding customer service before, during, and after installation.
