Siemens to Supply Trident Water Treatment Systems to Help Bring the City of Amsterdam, New York Water Treatment Plant into Compliance with EPA Regulations

Warrendale, Pennsylvania, USA, Mar 17, 2010 - Siemens has been selected to provide water treatment equipment as part of an $11Million upgrade to the City of Amsterdam, New York's water treatment plant. Siemens will supply seven Trident packaged water treatment systems in concrete basins with stainless steel internals. Siemens will also provide underdrain components for five carbon contactors. The new system will allow the city to improve the drinking water quality for this city of approximately 20,000 people. System startup is scheduled for late 2010.

The Trident packaged water treatment system will help the city meet water quality requirements.

"When the original plant was built, we were 20 years ahead of our time, and now we are border line with water quality requirements," said Michael Ryba, Amsterdam Chief Water Plant Operator. "We are looking forward to an upgraded system that, based on the pilot study, will allow us to meet State and Federal water quality requirements." The original drinking water plant, built in 1974, consisted of direct filtration. Over time, the aging equipment could not meet the water quality specifications for Trihalomethane (TTHM) and Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) levels, also referred to as disinfection byproducts (DBP). In 2004, Siemens performed a comprehensive study using a Trident packaged water treatment system that demonstrated the ability to meet the community's drinking water treatment needs. This successful pilot prompted the city of Amsterdam to choose Siemens as the supplier of the water treatment equipment for the new plant. The plant's existing filters will be converted to carbon contact units with granular activated carbon, which will also help reduce DBP and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) levels.
