Siemens Supports Companies with IT Security Act compliance

• Act requires security incidents to be reported as from November 2016

• Siemens offers security concept to protect critical infrastructures

Siemens offers companies industrial security solutions, products and services that help them to comply with the stipulations of the German IT Security Act (Deutsches IT-Sicherheitsgesetz). Security-relevant incidents in some of the critical infrastructures covered by the Act will have to be reported as of November 2016, and minimum IT security standards come into effect beginning in May 2017. This applies to the water, telecommunications, energy, and food and beverage industries.

Siemens offers an all-encompassing industrial security concept to support these requirements, covering industrial security products for system integrity and network security. These are complemented by services for analyzing the specific security situation, setting up and managing security systems, and include an early warning system for continuous monitoring of industrial plants. This enables companies to meet their obligations to report security-relevant incidents to the authorities. Siemens also offers forensic analyses of such incidents, allowing customers to submit reports that comply with international standards such as ISO 27002 and IEC 62443, as well as with the stipulations of the IT Security Act.

To minimize security risks, Siemens relies on a "Defense in Depth" concept that stretches from the operating to the enterprise level. The concept is based on three components: plant security, network security and system integrity - as recommended by ISA 99 / IEC 62443, the leading standard for security in industrial automation. Siemens assesses the security aspects ("Security by Design") from the product development stage to the manufacturing phase in order to increase product resistance to cyber-attacks. This is an important basis for satisfying the minimum IT security standards demanded by the IT Security Act. The security products include the Simatic S7-1500 controller, which has integrated security functions, and the security components of the Scalance S family.

Siemens also offers plant security services. These range from security assessments and the installation of protective mechanisms, such as firewalls and virus protection (security implementation), to the continuous surveillance of plants using the Manage Security portfolio. If Siemens experts detect a heightened risk, they warn customers and issue recommendations for proactive countermeasures.
