Siemens Presents New Innovations That Enhance Machine Tool Productivity

CHICAGO, Mar, 19, 2009 - At the EASTEC exhibition, May 19-21, 2009, in West Springfield, MA, Siemens Energy and Automation, Inc. will introduce new solutions and services for machine tool manufacturers and end-users. Under the theme, "Productivity in motion," the presentation will focus on turnkey solutions for the job shop and aerospace market segments.

For machine manufacturers and end-users, Siemens will exhibit its newest innovations in CNC (computer numerical control), motor and drive technology as well as a new and innovative solution for CNC training.

Solutions for Job Shop

For the job shop, new versions of the popular ShopMill and ShopTurn software packages allow users to achieve higher productivity and simplicity, as well as greater speed. By featuring easy, step-by-step, on-screen programming, job shops are enabled to quickly respond to customer demands by reducing programming, tooling and production times.

Together with the new SINUMERIK 802D solution line CNC, job shops are given the edge over the competition. The 802D is an operator panel-based control system that combines the numerical control (NC), the programmable logic controller (PLC) and the human machine interface (HMI) in a single unit. It is the ideal solution for the low- and medium-range milling and turning machine markets.

End-users will benefit from increased efficiency and productivity; convenient operation and programming through advanced programming support such as Siemens' ShopMill and ShopTurn;
and perfect handling through the use of compact flash (CF) cards for the storage, transmission and processing of part programs. Additionally, PROFINET, the standard industrial Ethernet, and PROFIBUS protocols are used for machine tool communication.

Solutions for Aerospace

For the aerospace market, the new SINUMERIK 840D solution line is the latest in CNC technology that increases performance and user productivity. The SINUMERIK 840D solution line is a universal and flexible CNC system featuring the innovative SINAMICS S120 drives that can be used for up to 31 axes. It is a distributed, scalable, open and inter-connecting system offering a wide range of specialized functions for milling, drilling, turning, grinding and handling technologies.

The 840D offers users innovative features that increase productivity on the manufacturing floor, especially the challenging segments of high-speed and five-axis aerospace machining.

Solutions for CNC Training

SinuTrain, the Siemens package of CNC training software on CD-ROM, is designed to run on Windows XP operating systems. It is the optimal solution for machine tool control-identical simulation training. Until Sept. 30, 2009, Siemens is offering the complete SinuTrain package of Siemens SINUMERIK CNC versions 802D/810D/840D/840Di, including the training keyboard, for only $1600. Additionally, other SinuTrain program components are being offered at discounted pricing until Sept. 30, 2009, to suit the particular needs of any training operation.

SinuTrain provides mill and lathe operators a high degree of practical hands-on experience, prior to using the CNCs on their actual machines. With SinuTrain, actual NC programs are developed and simulated, using a direct connection to the company's CAD systems to further speed the program generation protocol. In this way, operators not only learn the control language commands, they also visualize part programs on a PC screen that are identical to the actual machine screen. As a further benefit, programs generated through SinuTrain on the PC software can then be utilized on the machines.
