Severn Trent Wins Arsenic Removal Contract in Arizona

Arsenic removal system, which features SORB 33® technology and Bayoxide® E33 media, has been commercially proven effective for more than a decade

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. - January 10, 2006 - The SORB 33® arsenic removal technology and Bayoxide® E33 arsenic removal media from Severn Trent Services have been selected for use by the City of Nogales (Ariz.) Public Works Department in order to meet the new EPA arsenic standard for drinking water of 10 parts per billion at three water treatment facilities. One of the facilities has a flow capacity of 500 gallons per minute (gpm) and the other two have flow capacities of 1,250 gpm. Total arsenic in well locations for these three facilities has measured between 17 and 29 parts per billion (ppb). The arsenic removal systems will be installed during the first quarter of 2006.

The engineering consultant on the project is Westland Resources of Tucson, Ariz., which specializes in civil engineering, environmental planning, permitting and resource management.

Severn Trent Services developed the SORB 33 process to reduce arsenic contamination across a range of water treatment application sizes, and the technology has been commercially proven to effectively and economically meet the stringent new government MCL standard. Bayoxide E33 is a dry, robust, ferric oxide media designed with a high capacity for arsenic, providing long operating cycles and low operating costs. Compared to competitive technologies, Bayoxide E33 offers the lowest capital cost while providing ease of operation and maintenance. The media has been permitted for use by health and environmental agencies in 15 states, more than any other arsenic removal technology.
