Second Quarter Workholding Shipments Down from 2008 Levels



At $36.6 million for second quarter 2009, shipments of workholding equipment were down 43.6 percent from second quarter 2008 according to the Advanced Workholding Technologies (AWT) Group of AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology. Workholding equipment shipments within the United States by the 37 companies participating in the AWT statistical report totaled $32.2 million while exports amounted to $4.4 million.

The report from the AWT shows that domestic workholding equipment shipments decreased 23.9 percent and U.S. exports decreased 15.3 percent from first quarter 2009. The Midwest region remained the largest domestic destination with 41 percent of total domestic second quarter shipments going to that region, representing a slight increase in share from first quarter 2009. The West region lost 0.4 percent, bringing it to 10.3 percent, whereas the Northeast region gained 5.8 percent to account for 18.6 percent of domestic shipments in the first quarter. The Central and South regions decreased share, making up 16 and 14.3 percent of domestic shipments, respectively. Additionally, second quarter 2009 employment levels were down 9.2 percent from first quarter 2009 and down 17.7 percent when compared to the second quarter of 2008.

The Advanced Workholding Technology Group is comprised of AMT members that produce chucks, jaws, collets, vises, fixtures, and other workholding equipment.
