Safway named a 'Star' site in Cal/OSHA Voluntary Protection Program

WAUKESHA, Wis. - ThyssenKrupp Safway (Safway) has been honored as a "Star" site within the California Occupational Safety & Health Administration's (Cal/OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) at an Oct. 15 luncheon for exceptional work at Valero Energy Corporation's Benicia Refinery.

The Cal-OSHA VPP is a prestigious safety and health excellence program, and VPP "Star" status is the highest honor given to contractors at VPP worksites. The refinery worksite has been through an extensive Cal/OSHA review of jobsite conditions, safety records, employee safety and health programs, and regulatory compliance.

"Achieving this very rare and important safety milestone reflects Safway's company-wide commitment to safety, and we are pleased to have attained 'Star' status with Cal/OSHA at the Valero Refinery in Benicia," said Larry Mickwee, Safway western division vice president. "This distinction is the result of a partnership between Safway and Valero to work together to create and maintain a safe workplace for all employees. We would like to thank our site personnel and the Valero employees who made this award possible."

Since 1996, Safway has supplied scaffold and performed labor services at the Benicia Refinery for turnarounds, capital projects and routine maintenance. Many workers are onsite daily and have achieved zero recordables after more than 250,000 hours worked.

Throughout the last three years alone, Safway has received numerous awards for its dedication to providing a safe worksite at the refinery, including:

Large Contractor of the Year (2008)

Small Contractor of the Year (2006)

Contractor of the Month (March 2008, March 2009)

Meritorious Safety Performance for zero recordables (2007, 2008) from the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA)

"Safway has worked with Valero employees for over 13 years to weave safety into everything we do," said Wes Baker, Safway west coast regional safety manager. "The VPP 'Star' designation is a tribute to Safway's commitment to construction excellence and workplace safety."
