Safway Group Gulf Region Achieves SSPC Certification

Field Application to Complex Industrial and Marine Structures Certification Demonstrates Commitment to Quality

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Safway Group Gulf Region has received the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC, formally known as Steel Structures Painting Council) Field Application to Complex Industrial and Marine Structures Certification (QP 1) in protective coatings.

To achieve QP 1 status Safway had to demonstrate strong management procedures, safety health and environmental (SHE) compliance and quality control. These attributes were verified by a third-party auditor at an active jobsite and the Safway Freeport Branch. The audit had to verify that Safway had adhered to the SSPC’s high standards for a minimum of a six-month time frame, previous to the audit.

“Our team knocked the audit out of the park,” states Vice President of Multiservices Tim Siemek. “We couldn’t have accomplished this feat without Project Manager Eric Guevara, QC Coordinator Tommy McBeth, QC Manager David Williams, QC Tech Malcom Neal and our EHS Manager Andy Young. Additionally, special thanks should also be given to the VP of the Multiservices Leadership Team Joey Williams and our North American Coatings Manager of Training and Human Resources Andrea Archambeault. Their assistance through this process proved invaluable, and thanks to everyone’s hard work, we succeeded.”

“The achievement of QP 1 is the successful start of gaining more SSPC certifications,” said Williams. “We can now begin the process to achieve Thermal Spray Aluminum (QP6-TSA); Removal of Lead Containing Coatings (QP2); and Shop/Blast-yard Certification (QP3) where applicable. Receiving these certifications will signify our commitment to perform with the highest standards and to becoming the best multiservice contractor in the industry.”

Having the QP1 Certification allows Safway Gulf Region branches to work on more large coatings projects, many of which require the certification before a contractor is permitted to bid the job. Having the SSPC QP1 Certification assures potential customers that Safway Group is a professional company, which can perform the work safely and effectively while adhering to industry standards.

QP1 Certification enables facility owners to quickly identify a contractor’s capability to perform surface preparations and coatings applications on complex industrial and marine structures such as bridges; off-shore drilling; waste and water treatment facilities; ship maintenance; and petrochemical plants. The high standards, which have been developed by SSPC and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), are recognized throughout the world as the minimum level of service and quality for the coatings industry.
