SABIC Innovative Plastics Wins Two ACC Responsible Care® Energy Efficiency Awards for Significant Manufacturing Improvement

PITTSFIELD, Mass. - April 25, 2011 - On April 18, SABIC Innovative Plastics was honored by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) with two Responsible Care® Energy Efficiency Awards. The company's Mount Vernon, Ind., resin unit was recognized for significant manufacturing improvement after it redesigned its facility to simplify and optimize the resin purification process, leading to reduced use of steam and electrical energy. Additionally, the company's plastics manufacturing plant in Selkirk, NY took the ACC "Exceptional Merit" designation for a recently installed steam turbine generator to capture energy that was previously lost during pressure reduction. These prestigious awards demonstrate SABIC Innovative Plastics' strong, ongoing investment in sustainable practices to benefit the environment as a whole, communities where it operates and its customers.

"Sustainability is a strategic focus at SABIC Innovative Plastics that encompasses our products, our processes and our corporate philosophy," said Mike Walsh, general manager operations, SABIC Innovative Plastics. "We are pleased to be recognized by our industry for achieving major, measurable reductions in energy usage and emissions. Mount Vernon and Selkirk represent just two of our many locations globally where we're using the latest technologies to lower environmental impact while ensuring continued high quality and consistency of our products. We are committed to continuous improvement across our global organization."

Cutting Energy and Emissions

SABIC Innovative Plastics' resin purification improvements at its Mount Vernon facility cut electrical and steam-generated energy usage and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. The new process utilizes three patented plate decanter separators, which allowed for the elimination of electrically driven centrifuge separators.

The company's operations in Selkirk, NY reduced both energy and carbon dioxide emissions in 2010 with their new steam turbine generator. The turbine generates electricity from an existing steam flow and is integrated into the site's distribution system.

The ACC Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Awards program recognizes member companies that have made commendable achievements in improving energy efficiency and/or reducing greenhouse gases or other environmental impacts.
