Robert A. Malone to Lead BP America, Inc.
HOUSTON -- Robert A. Malone has been appointed Chairman and President of BP America, Inc. and will serve as BP's chief representative in the United States. Mr. Malone will be based in Houston, where BP business units are involved in oil and gas exploration and production, refining, chemicals, supply and trading , pipeline operations, shipping, and alternative energy. Houston is home to nearly 7,000 BP employees.
"I have known Bob Malone for more than two decades. He brings broad experience to his new position and a proven record of success in the companies he has led," said BP Chief Executive Officer John Browne.
Prior to accepting his current position, Mr. Malone served as chief executive of BP Shipping Limited where he was responsible for the operation of the energy industry's largest oil and natural gas fleet. During his tenure, BP Shipping accepted delivery of 48 new, double hull tankers.
During his career, Mr. Malone has held a series of increasingly senior positions within Kennecott Copper Corporation, the Standard Oil Company of Ohio (Sohio) and BP including an assignment as President, CEO, and Chief Operating Officer of Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, operator of the Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline.
Mr. Malone was raised in Northeast Texas. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso, and was an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a Master of Science in Management.
Mr. Malone is currently a Member of the Executive Committee of Oil Companies International Marine Forum and a Board Member of the UK Chamber of Shipping. He has also served on the California Climate Action Registry Board of Directors, the Board of the National Petroleum Council, and was a member of the Board of Regents for the University of Alaska system. In 2003, he was selected as the Alumnus of the Year by the University of Texas at El Paso.
Mr. Malone is married to Diane Trujillo Malone. They have two adult sons.
