Regenesis Introduces Advanced Electron Donor Technology for Treatment of Contaminated Groundwater and Soil

HRC Advanced(TM) dramatically improves subsurface distribution, destroys many chlorinated contaminants at significantly lower cost

SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA, October 11, 2006 - Regenesis Bioremediation Products, a leading developer and manufacturer of advanced technologies for protection of groundwater resources, announces a new in-situ technology, HRC Advanced(TM) (pat. pending), specifically designed to biologically enhance the destruction of a wide range of chlorinated contaminants through enhanced product distribution and at a significantly lower cost than other similar approaches. In particular this completely new molecule can be effective in treating industrial degreasers, such as PCE, TCA and their breakdown products; chlorofluorocarbons; carbon tetrachloride; chloroform; methylene chloride; and many types of pesticides, explosives and dyes.

HRC Advanced (also designated as "HRC-A") incorporates Regenesis' patented HRC® ("Hydrogen Release Compound") technology, which has been used successfully to clean up nearly a thousand sites worldwide. Through a focused R&D effort and rigorous testing, the new molecular structure of HRC Advanced offers specialized features that can be critical to in-situ treatment success. From staged hydrogen release, a high-volume microemulsion application and enhanced, wide area subsurface distribution, the new components of HRC Advanced offer unmatched enhanced bioremediation performance.

Like HRC, HRC Advanced is typically injected into saturated soil, where it produces a controlled release of lactic acid, whose fermentation by naturally occurring bacteria generates hydrogen. The added hydrogen sharply accelerates a series of natural anaerobic biodegradation processes (reductive dechlorination) that reduce the target contaminants to harmless end-products such as ethene and ethane.

"Since introducing HRC in 1999, we have worked closely with environmental scientists and engineers to bring our electron-donor technologies to the next level," said Bob Kelley, Regenesis' Vice President, Research & Development. "The result is HRC-A, an entirely new and unique molecule that time-releases, in stages, a combination of highly efficient lactic acid and fatty acids to assure near-, mid- and long-term biodegradation. A single application can produce reducing conditions for extended periods of over four years."

To ensure maximum subsurface distribution, HRC-A is usually mixed with water on-site into a thin, high-volume microemulsion that can be pumped throughout the pore space of an aquifer. This greatly increases contact with contaminants - a key to enhanced biodegradation success. The on-site generation of the high-volume microemulsion also forms micelles, which induces wide-area distribution in the soil/groundwater matrix, unlike emulsified oil-type products which tend to be immobile and in certain circumstances can reduce hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer.

HRC Advanced is shipped as a concentrate (thereby avoiding the cost of shipping water) and mixed on-site with three parts warm water to form a 3:1 water/HRC-A mixture. This process forms the injection-ready, stable, microemulsion/micelle mixture. Micelles are groups (spheres) of the HRC-A molecules with the charged group facing out to the water and the "tails" or lipophilic moieties facing inward. The tendency for HRC-A to form micelles provides the benefit of much greater subsurface distribution than can be achieved with any emuslified oil-based products and ultimately results in a much more cost-effective remediation of chlorinated contaminants

"Despite these advanced features, HRC-A comes in at a price point equal to or lower than the cost of similar but less-effective commodity products," says company president Scott Wilson. "To the best of our knowledge, HRC Advanced is the most advanced electron donor technology in the world today, as well as the most cost-effective."

San Clemente, CA-based Regenesis has been advancing the state of the art in the environmental industry since 1994 with new and innovative technologies that significantly reduce the cost, time and difficulty of restoring contaminated soil and groundwater. Regenesis' Oxygen Release Compound (ORC®) and Hydrogen Release Compound (HRC®) have been used successfully at more than 12,000 sites worldwide. These and other products, including the RegenOx(TM) in situ chemical oxidation system; HRC-X(TM), for long-term treatment of residual source areas and NAPLs; MRC®, for in-situ removal of dissolved metals (hexavalent chromium) in groundwater; and Bio-Dechlor INOCULUM(TM), a bioaugmentation culture, have made Regenesis the world leader in advanced in-situ technologies for protecting groundwater resources.
