President Obama Stops by IFM Efector's Booth and Tries New 3D Technology

During a tour of Hannover Messe, the largest industrial technology trade show in the world, President Obama and Chancellor Merkel visited the ifm electronic booth.

Michael Marhofer, CEO and owner of ifm electronic, and Bernd Buxbaum of pmd technologies, ifm electronic’s sister company, demonstrated pmd technology with a Virtual Reality camera. As President Obama looked through the camera viewer and moved his hands in front of the lens, the miniature device recognized his hand movements in 3D. It was an honor to explain the meaning of pmd technology to President Obama and Chancellor Merkel, and the excitement still resonates throughout the ifm organization!

The 3D technology demonstrated to President Obama is the same core technology that is used in two of ifm’s newly introduced products: the O3D Smart Sensor for Industrial Automation and the O3D Smart Sensor for Mobile Machines.

The O3D Industrial Smart Sensor utilizes the innovative pmd Time of Flight Imager that quickly and accurately measures the distance of 23,232 points within its field of view. Every measurement is collected simultaneously and made immediately available as a fully calibrated 3D point cloud, which can be sent to a PC or controller via Ethernet. ifm's 3D Smart Sensor includes two “pre-built” applications: case completeness and box dimensioning.
