PlateSmart and Samsung Create First LPR-Enabled Camera

Industry giant joins forces with leading software company to change security industry

OLDSMAR, FL — PlateSmart Technologies and Samsung Techwin together have created the world’s first line of surveillance cameras to be truly capable of License Plate Recognition (LPR). First introduced to the public at the 2014 ASIS Conference in Atlanta, the “open-platform” Wisenet III cameras were designed to allow PlateSmart’s ARES LPR-based video analytics solution and can accommodate a wide variety of add-on “apps.” ARES is the first LPR app available for the cameras.

With ARES onboard, a camera in this series is capable of LPR and video data analytics on its own, without the assistance of any external hardware. This is totally unlike traditional “LPR” cameras, which simply detect a license plate region within a video frame, then hand off to an external processor to “read” the plate. In this case, all image processing occurs within the camera, with the final results being output to the user. A true revolution in the security industry, the apps are available now through PlateSmart, placing both the cameras and apps at a cost-effective price point.

The introduction of this product line is the result of an extensive period of collaboration between PlateSmart and Samsung, both pioneers in their respective sectors of the security industry. Currently, PlateSmart is the only company to offer a viable LPR solution that is camera-agnostic; that is, compatible with a multitude of different cameras, yet capable of reading most any license plate in the world. Samsung Techwin, meanwhile, is the first and only company to offer an open-platform surveillance camera.

PlateSmart CEO John Chigos stated, “Innovation, being the first to do something, is what PlateSmart was founded on, and it shows. It’s not every day that you get to team up with a Fortune 500 company to create a new technology. This is truly an industry-changing development that will completely alter the way LPR and video analytics are done.”

“Our collaboration with PlateSmart fits our objective; to make expanding a surveillance system’s functionality as easy as adding an app to a smartphone,” said Tom Cook, Vice President, Sales, Samsung Techwin America. “Now users of Samsung cameras can add an LPR solution quickly and conveniently, without the need for any additional external hardware.”
