Philadelphia Scientific Water Injector(TM) Customers Average a Payback of 13 Months with Average First-Year Savings of $26,000

Statistics resulted from customer survey exploring return on investment

MONTGOMERYVILLE, Pa. - (July 12, 2006) - Philadelphia Scientific, a leading international manufacturer of industrial battery components, accessories and tools, today announced results of a customer survey measuring the return on investment experienced after the installation of Philadelphia Scientific's single point Water Injectors(TM). The survey of 13 customers, including distribution centers, production facilities and a cold storage facility, revealed a return on investment in as few as eight months, with an average of 13 months.

With Philadelphia Scientific's single-point battery watering system, each battery cell is outfitted with its own Water Injector(TM) valve, with all Injectors connected to a single piece of tubing. Operators simply attach a water supply hose to a quick-connect fitting on the tubing, release the water into the tube and each cell is filled simultaneously. Rather than the fifteen minutes it takes to water a battery manually, single-point systems complete the job in 15 - 20 seconds-approximately 45 times faster than manual watering.

For the study, return on investment was determined by considering a number of factors, including labor savings from the decreased time spent watering batteries, time saved due to less frequent battery changes during shifts and savings from less frequent battery purchases as batteries experience longer life spans due to proper maintenance. In a typical 100 battery fleet, a company can expect to save approximately $26,000 per year when considering all these factors. And with an average Water Injector life span of five years, and an additional five years if the system is refurbished, it is reasonable to expect a $260,000 savings over the life of the product.

"Too many warehouse managers have become accustomed to purchasing new batteries every four years. With a battery watering system and proper maintenance, a plant manager can easily obtain a five-year life from their batteries," said Harold Vanasse, vice president of sales and marketing for Philadelphia Scientific. "Another advantage stressed by our users is in the additional battery run-time provided by the system. With less battery changes during shifts, workers are able to spend less time dealing with maintenance, and more time being productive!"

Philadelphia Scientific offers a free Return on Investment (ROI) Calculator accessible through their Website at www.phlsci.com, which enables battery users to calculate the total cost and labor savings of the company's single point Water Injector system. The Calculator directs users to enter information including the number of cells in their batteries; the number of batteries being used; the cost of labor; the cost of the batteries and of the watering system; and the time it takes to manually water the batteries versus the time it takes to water them with Philadelphia Scientific's Water Injectors. The worksheet then calculates the total system cost, the total savings over five years, the return on investment and the payback period.
