PennWell to Launch Bio-Optics World Magazine and Website

New digital product focusing on advances in lasers, optics, and imaging for the life sciences

TULSA, Okla., Sept. 17 / -- Looking to capitalize on the rapidly growing market for optical technologies and instrumentation in the life sciences, PennWell Corporation (Nashua, NH) announces its latest venture, Bio-Optics World. The new magazine and website will launch in January 2008 at BiOS 2008, part of the SPIE Photonics West 2008 exhibition in San Jose, CA.

Comprising a bi-monthly magazine, monthly eNewsletter, and website (with daily news, products, application notes, web casts, and more), Bio-Optics World will focus on the design, development, and utilization of optical technologies for the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disease and disease processes. It is intended for biomedical researchers and engineers involved in the development and fabrication of optical components and systems used in the life sciences, as well as for scientists and clinicians who utilize these technologies, including biologists, physicists, physicians, pathologists, forensic scientists, pharmaceutical companies, and government agencies.

"The goal of Bio-Optics World is to provide engineers, biologists, researchers, and clinicians with a magazine and website that will facilitate the sharing of ideas among these disciplines," said Christine Shaw, Group Publisher & Sr. Vice President. "In essence, Bio-Optics World is designed to appeal to anyone interested in understanding how light interacts with the human body at the cellular, molecular, and tissue levels, and what the implications of this might be in the diagnosis and treatment of disease."

Specific markets and applications to be covered in Bio-Optics World include molecular imaging, cancer diagnostics, spectroscopy, microscopy, cytometry, OTC, optical trapping, biosensing, microfluidics, cell biology, chemical analysis, genomics, proteomics, drug discovery, and tissue engineering. Because the magazine has its roots in the well-respected business newsletter, Medical Laser Report, it will also cover therapeutic applications in ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiology, urology, dentistry, and photodynamic therapy. In addition, the magazine will track the latest developments at key government agencies related to funding and technology initiatives in the optical life sciences.

"Our goal for Bio-Optics World is not just to explain how the technology works and how it is being used, but to provide critical information about the potential for these technologies and applications to change the future of medicine," said Kathy Kincade, Editor-in-Chief. "A majority of the biomedical research being conducted today involves identifying and understanding real issues related to real people. We want to humanize the technology by looking at how it is helping to improve patient care and the role it is playing in the creation of a new medical paradigm -- what the National Institutes of Health refers to as 'predictive, pre-emptive, personalized, and participatory' medicine."
