Penn State Engineering Associate Honored as 'Manufacturer of the Year'

IMET Corporation, a contract electronics manufacturer in Southampton, PA whose founder earned an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology at Penn State’s Abington/Ogontz campus, has again been honored for its exceptional growth and business strategy. Outranking numerous businesses many times its size and age, the company was named “2014 Manufacturer of The Year” by Greater Philadelphia’s Chamber of Commerce annual Excellence Awards. This distinction came within weeks after IMET’s inclusion in this year’s prestigious “Inc. 5000” list of America’s fastest-growing private companies.

“Needless to say, receiving both of these coveted awards is quite a tribute to our executive, engineering and production staffs,” reflects President Tom Krol, whose original career choice was being the lead guitarist in a moderately successful rock band. However, a Penn State guidance counselor advised Tom to take a less arduous and “more secure” vocational path – in engineering. “Acting on that lady’s suggestion was the best thing I’ve ever done,” reflects the 38-year-old Philadelphia native. He founded IMET in 2000 from a rented garage while still a sophomore and subsequently attending classes at night to receive his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from The College of New Jersey. Today, the company now owns and operates a 15,000 sq. ft. building in Southampton, PA serving the medical, military, industrial and consumer marketplaces with product design and development, electronics engineering and circuit assembly.

Numerous products owe their success to IMET’s engineering and product expertise. A recent example is “Wizard of Oz” – not the 1939 movie, but a re-creation of it in a new, ground-breaking pinball game that features the original cast and music from the classic film. Said to be the most complex pinball game ever developed, IMET does the automated circuit assembly for each of the 56 printed circuit boards it contains. There’s a long waiting list to play and/or buy this incredible – and expensive – amusement.
