Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) Consultant Becomes First in Colorado to Achieve Passive House (Passivehaus) Certification

James Scott Brew looks to bring world's most rigorous building energy standard to RMI projects.

Snowmass CO - Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) today announced that James Scott Brew, FCSI, AIA, LEED AP, Principal Architect at RMI has achieved certification as a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) by the Passive House Institute-US.

The Passive House Standard, founded by Dr. Wolfgang Feist of the Passivhaus-Institute, Darmstad, Germany, is the most rigorous building energy standard in the world. The integrated design process uses a variety of new and existing technologies and techniques, including passive solar design, superinsulation, advanced window technology, airtightness, ventilation, and high efficiency appliances, to achieve a level of efficiency that far exceeds standard building codes.

As the first in Colorado to achieve certification, and one of about 100 persons in the country, Mr. Brew is currently working on research around lessons learned in applying the Passive House standard in the USA, and is completing design documentation for the retrofit of Rocky Mountain Institute's original headquarters in Old Snowmass, Colorado to achieve Passive House Certification.

This announcement comes as RMI strengthens their team in preparation to take on their most ambitious work to date in the building sector - to spur the retrofit of at least 500 buildings over the next five years. Their soon to launch initiative called RetroFit aims to initiative a process that will encourage the retrofit of the entire U.S. commercial building stock to use, on average, 50 percent less energy by 2050.
