Outstanding Achievements Recognized at ASHRAE's Annual Meeting



ALBUQUERQUE - ASHRAE is recognizing 70 members and one chapter for contributions to ASHRAE and the HVAC&R industry at the Society's 2010 Annual Conference being held here June 26-30.

The Andrew T. Boggs Service Award recognizes a past Distinguished Service Award recipient for continuing, unselfish, dedicated and distinguished service. The recipient is Presidential Member Donald G. Colliver, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, a professor, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky.

The Exceptional Service Award recognizes Distinguished Award recipients who have continued to serve the Society faithfully and with exemplary effort. Twelve recipients were recognized:

The Distinguished 50-Year Member Award is given to persons who have been a member of the Society for 50 years and have performed outstanding service to the Society. The following nine members are receiving this award:

o Walter Cohen, Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, who lived in Alpharetta, Ga., honored posthumously.

o John T. Dugan, Life Member, retired and currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

o Carl H. Jordan, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, a retired mechanical engineer, Berkeley, Calif.

o James P. Roubal, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, founder, Dana Larson Roubal Inc., now known as DLR Group, Inc., Omaha, Neb.

o Carl F. Speich, Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, a retired staff engineer, the Trane Co., La Crosse, Wis.

The Journal Paper Award honors the best paper or article published in ASHRAE Journal. J. Steven Brown, Ph.D., P.E., is the recipient for his article, HFOs: New, Low Global Warming Potential Refrigerants.. Brown is associate professor mechanical engineering, The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Jelena Srebric, Ph.D., and Paulo Cesar Tabares-Velasco, Ph.D., are the recipients of the Crosby Field Award. Their paper, The Role of Plants in the Reduction of Heat Flux through Green Roofs: Laboratory Experiments, was judged to be the best paper presented before the Society in 2009. The Crosby Field Award is named for Presidential Member Crosby Field, whose ideas and hard work helped shape the industry. In addition, Tabares-Velasco receives the Willis H. Carrier Award, which is given to an ASHRAE member 32 years of age or younger for presenting an outstanding paper at a Society meeting. Srebric and Tabares-Velasco also received a Poster Presentation Award, given to peer-reviewed technical papers with the best visual and technical information presented at Society meetings. Srebric is associate professor, architectural engineering, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa.; Tabares-Velasco is a postdoctoral researcher, Residential Building Research, National Renewable Energy Lab, Golden, Colo.

The following papers were selected to receive ASHRAE Transactions Paper Awards, which recognize the authors of the best papers presented at Society meetings.

o James A. Mathias, Ph.D., P.E., and Duane M. Mathias receive an award for Energy Efficient, Cost Effective, Passive Solar House. They also received a Poster Presentation Award, given to peer-reviewed technical papers with the best visual and technical information presented at Society meetings. James Mathias is associate professor, Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes Department, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Carbondale, Ill.; Duane Mathias is owner, Mathias Home Builder, Rochester, Minn.

o Emilio C. Piesciorovsky, P.Eng., and Warren N. White, Ph.D., receive an award for Building Heat Load Contributions from Medium- and Low-Voltage Switchgear, Part 2: Component and Overall Switchgear Heat Gains. Piesciorovsky recently was accepted in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Kansas State University to obtain his doctorate. White is an associate professor, Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Department, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan.

o Thomas Kuehn, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Bernard A. Olson, Ph.D., James W. Ramsey, Ph.D., and Joshua M. Rocklage., receive an award for Grease Particle Emission Characterization from Seven Commercial Kitchen Cooking Appliances and Representative Food Products. Kuehn is professor of mechanical engineering, Olson is a researcher, and Ramsey is a professor, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn.; Rocklage is an engineer, Solar Turbines, San Diego, Calif.

o Timothy C. Wagner, Ph.D., Neil P. Leslie, P.E., Richard S. Sweetser and Theresa K. Stovall, P.E., receive an award for Combined Heating and Power Using Microturbines in a Major Urban Hotel. Wagner is principal engineer, United Technologies Research Center, East Hartford, Conn.; Leslie is R&O manager, Gas Technology Institute, Des Plaines, Ill.; Sweetser is president, EXERGY Partners Corp., Herndon, Va.; Stovall is senior research engineer, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The Lincoln Bouillon Award recognizes a member who performs the most outstanding work in increasing the membership of the Society during the course of the year. The recipient is Rajnish Joshi, director, SRP Enviro Systems Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, India.

The Dan Mills Technical Award recognizes a Chapter Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC) chair who excels in meeting CTTC goals in technical, energy and government activities. The recipient is Jean-Gabriel Joannette, P.Eng., project manager at Pageau Morel and Associates, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The Chapter Program Star Award recognizes excellence in chapter program endeavors. The recipient is Christopher Ahne is account manager, Trane Arkansas, Little Rock, Ark.

The William J. Collins Jr. Research Promotion Award is given to the chapter research promotion chair who raises the most money for ASHRAE research. The recipient is the late Bobbie Vermillion of the Central Oklahoma Chapter

The Mississippi Chapter receives the Society's Government Activities Award, which recognizes an ASHRAE chapter for outstanding effort and achievement in state, provincial and local government activities in connection with technical issues related to the activities of the Society.

J. Blaine Walker Jr. of Columbia, S.C., is the recipient of the Society's Lou Flagg Historical Award, which recognizes a chapter Gold Ribbon Award winner for compiling information on outstanding historical projects or persons related to HVAC&R. The award is named in recognition of Presidential Member Lou Flagg, who promoted an interest in history at the chapter and Society levels.

The Environmental Health Award recognizes excellence in volunteer service focused on environmental health issues. The recipient is Andrew K. Persily, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Md.

The Standards Achievement Award recognizes significant and exceptional service in the area of standards leadership and technical contribution. The recipient is Dennis A. Stanke, Fellow ASHRAE, staff applications engineer, The Trane Co., Ingersoll-Rand, La Crosse, Wis.

The ASHRAE Student Activities Achievement Award recognizes a Chapter Student Activities chair for service related to the goals and growth of student activities at all levels. The recipient is Nicolas Lemire, Eng., principal, Pageau Morel and Associates, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The Milton W. Garland Commemorative Refrigeration Award for Project Excellence award recognizes the designer and owner of a non-comfort cooling refrigeration application that highlights innovation and/or new technologies. The recipient is Tom Dosch, P.E., project engineer, C&L Refrigeration, Brea, Calif.

Gwelen Paliaga, a senior mechanical designer, Taylor Engineering, Alameda, Calif., is the recipient of the Ralph G. Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award, which is given to a researcher under the age of 40 for significant accomplishments in the study of bioenvironmental engineering and its effect on human comfort and health.

Nathan A. Kotey, Ph.D., is the recipient of the Homer Addams Award, which honors a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project. The Homer Addams Award is intended to encourage graduate student research. Kotey resides in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of some 50,000 persons. Its sole objective is to advance through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.
