Held June 25-29, ASHRAE's 2011 Annual Conference saw 59 people recognized for their contributions to the Society and building industry. Specific awards covered areas such as preeminence in engineering or research work, continued service and effort, as well as, published papers and articles. Additional awards recognize such efforts towards membership expansion, meeting CTTC goals, and research promotion. Still other awards looked at historical compilations and government activities.

Outstanding Achievements Recognized at ASHRAE's Annual Meeting

MONTREAL - Fifty-nine people were recognized by ASHRAE for their contributions to the Society and the building industry at the Society's 2011 Annual Conference held here June 25-29.

The Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, given to an ASHRAE fellow for continuous preeminence in engineering or research work, is awarded to Byron W. Jones, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, associate dean for research, College of Engineering, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan.

The Andrew T. Boggs Service Award recognizes past recipients of the Distinguished Service Award for continuing unselfish, dedicated and distinguished service to the Society. It is awarded to Presidential Member Richard B. Hayter, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, associate dean of engineering for external affairs emeritus, College of Engineering, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan.

The Exceptional Service Award recognizes Distinguished Award recipients who have continued to serve the Society faithfully and with exemplary effort. Ten recipients were recognized:

Van Baxter, P.E., is senior research and development engineer, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Sheila Hayter, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, is manager, U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Golden, Colo.

Richard Hermans, P.E., ASHRAE Certified Healthcare Facility Design Professional, is director of training and advanced applications, McQuay International, Minneapolis, Minn.

Tom Lawrence, Ph.D., P.E., is senior public service associate, University of Georgia, Athens, Ga.

Michael Ohadi, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, is professor and co-director, Center for Environmental Energy Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, Md.

The Distinguished Service Award salutes members of any grade for giving freely of their time and talent to the Society. The following 17 members were selected:

The Distinguished 50-Year Member Award is given to persons who have been a member of the Society for 50 years and have performed outstanding service to the Society. The following six members are receiving this award:

Frederick Holste, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, is principle and founder, Holste & Associates, Inc., Houston, Texas

Charles Knights, Life Member, is retired and lives in Louisville, Ky.

Oliver Lewis, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, is retired and lives Lawrenceville, Ga.

Thomas Smith, F.R.Eng, C.Eng, Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, is retired and lives in Herts, England

The Journal Paper Award honors the best paper or article published in ASHRAE Journal. Steven T. Taylor, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, and C. Hwakong Cheng receive the award for their article, "Economizer High Limit Controls and Why Enthalpy Economizers Don't Work." Taylor is principal and Cheng is senior mechanical designer, Taylor Engineering, Alameda, Calif.

Frank Lu, Ph.D., P.E., Matthew Sitzmann, P.E., and Steve R. Smith, P.E., receive an ASHRAE Poster Presentation Award for "Effects of Dents in Condenser Fins on Air Conditioner Performance." The award is given to peer-reviewed technical papers with the best visual and technical information presented at Society Conferences.

Jeffrey D. Spitler, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, and Bereket A. Nigusse, Ph.D., are the recipients of the Crosby Field Award. Their paper, "Refinements and Improvements to the Radiant Time Series Method," was judged to be the best paper presented before the Society in 2010. The Crosby Field Award is named for Presidential Member Crosby Field, whose ideas and hard work helped shape the industry. Both Sptiler and Nigusse also receive an ASHRAE Paper Award, which recognize the authors of the best papers presented at Society meetings. Spitler is Regents professor and C.M. Leonard Professor, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla. Nigusse is a research engineer, Florida Solar Energy Center, University of Central Florida, Cocoa, Fla.

Michael S. Waring, Ph.D., is the recipient of the Willis H. Carrier Award, which is given to an ASHRAE member 32 years of age or younger for presenting an outstanding paper at a Society meeting. In addition, Waring and co-author, Jeffrey A. Siegel, Ph.D., receive an ASHRAE Paper Award for their paper "The Influence of HVAC Systems on Indoor Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation." Waring is an assistant professor, Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pa. Siegel is an associate professor and the J. Neils Thompson Centennial Teaching Fellow, Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, University of Texas at Austin.

The following papers were selected to receive ASHRAE Paper Awards, which recognize the authors of the best papers presented at Society meetings.

Keisuke Sekiguchi, Dr. Eng., Shisei Waragai, Dr. Eng., Tsuneo Uekusa, Dr. Eng., and Kenji Yamasaki receive an award for "Development of a High-Efficiency Air Cooled Packaged Air Conditioner for Data Centers." Sekiguchi is a research engineer, NTT Facilities Inc., Tokyo, Japan. Waragai is executive manager, Environment and Energy Systems Development Division, Research and Development Headquarters, NTT Facilities Inc., Tokyo, Japan. Uekusa is executive manager, NIPPON Telegraph and Telephone West Corp., Osaka, Japan. Yamasaki is a senior engineer, Hitachi Appliances Inc., Shizuoka-shi, Japan.

Christian A. Gueymard, Ph.D., and Didier Thevenard, Ph.D., P.Eng., receive an award for "Updating the ASHRAE Climatic Data for Design and Standards." Gueymard is president, Solar Consulting Services, Colebrook, N.H. Thevenard is principal, Numerical Logics Inc., Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

The Lincoln Bouillon Award recognizes a member who performs the most outstanding work in increasing the membership of the Society during the course of the year. The recipient is G. Ramesh Kumar, manager, products division, ETA Engineering, Bangalore, India.

The Dan Mills Technical Award recognizes a Chapter Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC) chair who excels in meeting CTTC goals in technical, energy and government activities. The recipient is Keith H. Reihl, P.E., ASHRAE-Certified High Performance Building Design Professional, president, Reihl Engineering LLC, Houston, Texas. Reihl is also receiving the Chapter Program Star Award, which recognizes excellence in chapter program endeavors.

The William J. Collins Jr. Research Promotion Award is given to the chapter research promotion chair that raises the most money for ASHRAE research. The recipient is George W. "Billy" Austin Jr., P.E., principal, Shultz Engineering Group, Charlotte, N.C.

The Hong Kong Chapter receives the Society's Government Activities Award, which recognizes an ASHRAE chapter for outstanding effort and achievement in state, provincial and local government activities in connection with technical issues related to the activities of the Society.

Robert Bean, R.E.T., P.L.(Eng.), Bjarne W. Olesen, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, and Kwang Woo Kim are the recipients of the Society's Lou Flagg Historical Award, which recognizes a chapter Gold Ribbon Award winner for compiling information on outstanding historical projects or persons related to HVAC&R. The award is named in recognition of
Presidential Member Lou Flagg, who promoted an interest in history at the chapter and Society levels. Bean is a building and IEQ consultant, Healthy Heating, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Olesen is a professor, Department of Civil Engineering, and director of the International Center for Indoor Environment, Technical University of Denmark. Kim is a professor, Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea.

The Standards Achievement Award recognizes significant and exceptional service in the area of standards leadership and technical contribution. The recipient is Mick Schwedler, P.E., manager, Applications Engineering, The Trane Co., La Crosse, Wis.

The ASHRAE Student Activities Achievement Award recognizes a Chapter Student Activities chair for service related to the goals and growth of student activities at all levels. The recipients are Clayton A. Lampman, P.E., Life Member, president, C.A. Lampman Associates Inc., Arcadia, Calif.; Harmohindar Singh, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, professor of architectural and mechanical engineering, and director of the Center for Energy Research and Technology, North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, N.C.

The Milton W. Garland Commemorative Refrigeration Award for Project Excellence award recognizes the designer and owner of a non-comfort cooling refrigeration application that highlights innovation and/or new technologies. The recipient is John Bittner, P.E., research engineer, Research and Development, Hill Phoenix Inc., Conyers, Ga.

Jan Kaczmarczyk, assistant professor and vice chair of the Department of Heating, Ventilation and Dust Removal Team, Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland, is the recipient of the Ralph G. Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award, which is given to a researcher under the age of 40 for significant accomplishments in the study of bioenvironmental engineering and its effect on human comfort and health.

Sebastian Herrmann is the recipient of the Homer Addams Award, which honors a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project. The Homer Addams Award is intended to encourage graduate student research. Herrmann is a doctoral student at the University of Rostock, Germany.

Its sole objective is to advance through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.
