Novomer Captures Industry Honors at 2015 Polyurethanes Technical Conference

WALTHAM, Mass. - Novomer Inc., a sustainable materials company pioneering a family of high-performance polymers and other chemicals from renewable feedstocks such as carbon dioxide (CO2), captured a pair of honors recently at the 2015 Polyurethanes Technical Conference, sponsored by The Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) of the American Chemistry Council. Novomer was one of three finalists in the 2015 Polyurethane Innovation Award competition and also received Best Presentation Award for a paper presented during the technical conference.

The recent conference held Oct. 5-7 in Orlando, Florida, featured 75 technical papers and 38 poster presentations and was attended by over 1,000 industry professionals.

As a finalist for the Polyurethane Innovation Award, Novomer was recognized for its Converge®Polyol RF-x polyols which are utilized in polyisocyanurate rigid (PIR) foams. These optimized materials allow foam manufacturers to process PIRs with traditional equipment and processing conditions while benefitting from the properties derived from Polypropylene Carbonate (PPC) polyols. Converge RF-x polyols contain increased levels of carbon dioxide with decreased levels of petrochemical feedstocks that enable improved properties of the PIR foam along with the ability for these materials to be competitively priced with incumbent polyols.

Converge® RF-x polyols offer improved flammability performance, enabling a significant reduction in total smoke and heat release when compared to conventional aromatic polyester polyols. In addition, Converge® polyols have a reduced carbon and energy footprint when compared to traditional rigid polyols.

At the Polyurethanes Technical Conference, as selected by independent industry experts, Novomer received the Best Presentation Award for a paper entitled "Advances in the Use of CO2-Based Polyols in Rigid Insulation Foam Applications." This paper described the RF-x technology in more detail, the same technology that was selected as a finalist for the innovation award. The winning paper, presented in the Construction technical session, focused on data and results generated during commercial scale trials of Novomer's Converge® RF-x polyols.

Novomer's polycarbonate polyol technology platform uses a proprietary catalyst to combine waste CO2 with commodity epoxides to produce highly precise polyols which are up to 50% CO2 by weight. These polyols enhance not only the performance but also the sustainability and economics of polyurethane products in a wide range of end-use applications.

The new Converge® polyols are available globally. The company's initial product offerings – 1000 and 2000 molecular weight grades – are manufactured at a multi-thousand-ton commercial-scale toll facility in Houston, Texas. Novomer is working closely with several major companies on new applications for various segments of the polyurethanes industry.
