A mobile safety module provides increased safety in mobile logistics applications

Together with the IPC based mobile safety module the noax forklift PCs create a clear safety advantage in mobile logistic applications.

noax forklift PCs with motherboard variations N7 and N8 can be immediately outfitted or upgraded with a mobile safety module. In addition, connecting forklift PCs with the forklift electronics can now solve various problems relevant to safety.

Logistics departments are presently characterized by their extremely high degree of automation. The connection of stationary and mobile workplaces via PC-based technologies, such as storage management systems (LVS), forklift computers, handheld units, as well as identification and display technology, enables efficient and effective in-house logistics.

However, the advantages of logistics automation also contain high safety problems. For example, the forklift driver is often confronted with a mass of information on his screen. In addition, he is expected to activate entries by touch panel or verify in-house logistics orders, which result in a diversion, as well as an excessive demand on the forklift driver, drastically increasing accident risks. High property damage because of accidents is therefore not a rare occurrence.

noax forklift PCs with mobile safety modules provide increased safety in mobile logistics applications

The mobile safety module, especially designed for noax forklift PCs, is the answer here. The forklift PC is connected with forklift electronics by means of a DIO supplement circuit board on the noax motherboard. This allows for various safety functions for safe mobile operation in combination with a noax forklift PC.

Diverse forklift PC functions reduce the risk of accidents

In order to increase operational safety, the mobile safety module can be configured in such a way, e.g. when the forklift starts to move, the brightness of the display will automatically be dimmed by a signal or become totally dark. It is also possible to deactivate the touch or service keys while the vehicle is moving. This would almost totally exclude the accident-prone distractions of the driver while moving. If the forklift should stop, however, the driver will again have full access to the screen, touch and service keys, keyboard or peripheral units. This would keep the efficiency of the mobile in-house logistics, even with the noax mobile safety module, entirely intact. More functions could also be utilized, by connecting the industrial PC and the forklift electronics, such as immediately turning on the PC during starting of the forklift via ignition by means of a signal, or it could be delayed with a time delay.

Electronically controlled personalization prevents unauthorized PC access and data entry

In addition to accident prevention, the mobile safety module can also handle data security. Different types of security related personalized access for the shock proof PC can be connected with the forklift, by means of external software tools, which allows for all kinds of different configurations. If, for example, a storage operator starts a forklift he generally has to get access by entering his password or his RFID transponder chip, and if he were to turn the forklift off for a short 5-minute pause, he would have to log in again when he resumed his work. The advantage of the personalized access is obvious: it would almost completely prevent unauthorized operation of the forklift PC, or the resulting incorrect data entry, which could have far-reaching consequences all the way to the storage management system, resulting in immense costs.

Various couplings between the noax PC and the forklift electronics are possible

In addition to coupling the shock proof noax PC to the forklift ignition or to the forklift drive electronics, other function connections between the PC and the vehicle are also possible. The noax rugged computer can, for example, be coupled to forklift warning lights, acoustic signals, or to the control of the "fork" itself. In the case of extensive in-house logistics, the PC could activate warning lights or an acoustic signal on the forklift and automatically bring the "fork" into the drive position.

Two pre-set sample configurations of the mobile safety module are available, as well as simple individual adaptability

Presently, noax Technologies is offering two pre-set sample configurations of the mobile safety module with 12 functions each for its forklift computers, covering about 80% of the input areas. The parameter set-up can be changed by means of a graphic N set-up program, or through a configuration file, which is inputted with an in-house logistics tool, directly at the PC.

Sarasota, February 2008

World-wide, noax Technologies is the leading manufacturer of rugged, tough and reliable NEMA 4X touch panel industrial computers. The company's business strategy is to use proprietary industrial electronics in completely sealed panel PCs without external fans. noax rugged industrial computers are being used in the harshest environments where the touch panel PCs are proving their resistance to heat, cold, moisture, dust, vibration, shock, acids and detergents.
