Sealy, Stewart, Ryan, Marshall to Lead 2010 Institute Board of Directors



The 2010 National Institute of Building Sciences Board of Directors is now in place. The Executive Team includes Jim. W. Sealy as chair, RK Stewart as vice chair, James "Tim" Ryan as secretary, and Mortimer M. Marshall. Jr., as treasurer.

Jim. W. Sealy, FAIA, NCARB, HFES, Hon. ICC, an architect and consultant to the design, codes, construction and legal profession, has more than 40 years of experience in the design and construction industries. Sealy was elected to the Board in 2007 as an architect in the public interest category.

RK Stewart, FAIA, NCARB, Hon. FRAIC, Hon. JIA, Hon. RAIA, LEED AP, is an associate principal in the San Francisco office of architecture firm Perkins+Will. He has extensive experience in large scale, mixed-use projects, institutional projects, renovation/restoration projects and office projects. He was elected to the Board in 2008 as an architect in the public interest category.

James "Tim" Ryan, CBO, is the code administrator for the city of Overland Park, Kan. He has more than 30 years of experience in administration, enforcement and development of construction safety codes, construction management and methods. A certified building official, he was elected to the Board in 2006 as a local agency official in the public interest category.

Mortimer M. Marshall, Jr., FAIA, FCSI, NOMAC, is president of The Marshall Group, a family-owned architecture, structural engineering, contract management and general contracting firm in Reston, Va. He was elected to the Board in 2005 as an architect in the public interest category.

The Institute's Nominations Committee recommended the slate, which the Board unanimously approved in September, of officers and returning board members, as well as a new member, Steven R. Winkel. The officers and members were seated following the December Board meeting, which was held during the Ecobuild America Conference in Washington, D.C.

New Board member Steven R. Winkel, FAIA, PE, is a partner of the Preview Group, Inc., and manages the firm's San Francisco Bay Area office. He joins returning Board members John F. Bender, PE, FSFPE, of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.; Dwight "Sonny" M. Richardson, Jr., of Richardson Home Builders, Inc.; and Emory R. Rodgers of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development; as well as presiding Board members Carl F. Baldassarra, PE. FSFPE, of the RJA Group, Inc., Heidi Brock of Weyerhaeuser Company; C. Morgan Edwards; Sen. Bill Hardiman of Michigan's 29th District; Steve M. Hays, PE, CIH, FACEC, of Gobbell Hays Partners, Inc.; John P. Kelly of Ryan Companies US, Inc.; Susan S. Klawans of Gilbane Building Company; Edward L. Soenke, FCSI, AIA, CCS, NCARB, of the Design Partnership, Architects; and Brent H. Woodworth of the Los Angeles Emergency Preparedness Foundation.

Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA, FACHA, FHFI, Chairman Emeritus of HKS Architects, who completed his second term as Board chair in 2009, will continue to serve as a member of the board through 2011.

William J. Coad, PE, FASHRAE, President of Coad Engineering Enterprises, retires from the Board but will remain as a member on several program committees within the Institute.

The National Institute of Building Sciences, authorized by public law 93-383 in 1974, is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that brings together representatives of government, the professions, industry, labor and consumer interests to identify and resolve building process and facility performance problems. The Institute serves as an authoritative source of advice for both the private and public sectors with respect to the use of building science and technology.
