New 'Keystone' Award Presented to Recognize Effective Training for Dangerous Goods Transportation

Award Presented at Dangerous Goods Symposium for Instructors in October

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - (November 6, 2008) - The first Dangerous Goods Training Keystone Award was presented last month during the Labelmaster-sponsored, third annual Dangerous Goods Instructors Symposium, October 21-24, in Deerfield Beach, Fla. The award was presented to the CAP 483 team of the UK Civil Aviation Administration's (CAA) Dangerous Goods Office. Ross McLachan of the Dangerous Goods Office accepted the award from Katherine Rooney, Dangerous Goods Programme Manager of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The Keystone Award was created to enhance safety by recognizing significant contributions to the development of effective training in dangerous goods transportation.

Labelmaster and Hazardous Cargo Bulletin (HCB) are pleased to announce the creation of a new global award recognizing important achievements in the field of dangerous goods training.

Mr. McLachlan represented the team that developed and implemented CAP 483, a comprehensive dangerous goods training standard, under the leadership of Geoff Leach. This document provides the basis for the DGAC/PHMSA dangerous goods training guidelines. For the first time in North America, a comprehensive multi-modal minimum set of requirements is available to which industry can refer to ensure that their dangerous goods transportation training meets all regulatory requirements while being effective and efficient.

"This award recognizes the role that dangerous goods (DG) instructors play in bridging the gap between regulation and implementation. DG instructors are effectively "keystones" in ensuring safety in the transportation of dangerous goods" explained Neil McCulloch, Manger of International Product Development for Labelmaster, on how the award was created.

Additionally, Mr. McLachlan was involved in the development of the new dangerous goods trainers association (DGTA). "When we first looked at forming an association of dangerous goods trainers, we were prepared to roll up our sleeves and spend a considerable amount of time developing the principles and standards on which to base the new organization. Ross' team, however, has done a great deal of the work for us!" commented Haldis Fearn of HMF2.
