New Henkel Literature Pack Showcases Spectacular Special Effects for Printing and Packaging

April 26, 2010 Bridgewater, NJ - Henkel Corporation is offering a new literature pack that illustrates creative special effects and dynamic finishes on printing and packaging with sustainable UV-cured Miracure® and MiraFoil® coatings.

"Market response to our MiraFoil® metallic coating has been incredible," said Ryan Weiss, Business Development Manager at Henkel. "As a result, we wanted to demonstrate even more options for printers, designers, and end users. The packet of promotional pieces does this with some beautiful examples of gloss, emboss, glitter, matte, pearlescent, texture, and glow-in-the-dark finishes."

According to Weiss, a key benefit of Henkel technology is that all effects were printed on an offset press at full press speed. The coatings were applied in-line by an anilox coating tower. "Traditionally, if you wanted to create water droplets on apples or texture on a sandy beach," said Weiss, "printers would have to use off-line silk screening process. Henkel's technology and expertise gives printers the ability to create these effects in-line using their offset or flexographic press."

According to Dennis Drummond, Senior Key Account Manager, the promotional pieces were printed at about 8,000 sheets per hour. "Not only is this a faster process, the cost is relatively small compared to off-line processes," commented Drummond.

Drummond added that the Miracure® and MiraFoil® coatings are environmentally responsible and recyclable through the de-inking process. "Henkel's MiraFoil® metallic UV coating eliminates off-line lamination or foil stamping, reducing processing steps," he said. "There are no warehousing or lead time issues as with foil laminated stocks. Operators can selectively print metallic colors at normal printing speeds, instead of full lamination. What's more, board printed with MiraFoil® does not interfere with RFID and electronic article surveillance tags used for anti-theft in stores."

Processes for all finishes are easy to implement, according to Drummond. "We've perfected the techniques, so the processes are easier, faster, and more cost effective than traditional alternatives."

"So far, response has been phenomenal," said Weiss. "We've already been on press for some big customers. It's a lot of fun having an innovative, unique technology that people want."
