New Flyers Present Henkel's Sustainability Initiatives

Bridgewater, NJ, March 17, 2009 - The Industrial Adhesives business of Henkel Corporation has published six flyers featuring information about the company's products that promote green and sustainable goals in multiple applications and markets.

o "Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Solutions" details Henkel's DURO-TAK® and Technomelt® adhesive products. For users desiring to eliminate VOC emissions, for example, Technomelt® 100% solids hot melts and DURO-TAK® UV 100% solids acrylic-based UV-curable PSAs are an eco-friendly alternative to water- and solvent-based PSAs. The brochure further explains that DURO-TAK® UV high solids adhesives cure with ultraviolet light and cut energy consumption as they deliver performance equal to solvent-based acrylics. In addition to eliminating emissions, DURO-TAK® UV and Technomelt® brands reduce flammable inventories, special storage, and permitting requirements. Furthermore, both product families enable users to achieve optimal use of existing dryers and to occupy a smaller coater footprint compared to solvent coaters.

o "Adhesive Solutions for Folding Cartons" features Henkel's CycloflexTM adhesives and MiraFoil® coatings. Patented CycloflexTM adhesives provide ease of cleaning because they simply dissolve and wash away from reclaimed pulp during paper recycling. This formulation enables full repulpability, prevention of "stickies," reclamation of more pulp, and the reduction of paper web breakage. MiraFoil® coatings are the sustainable alternative to hot foil stamping and foil board laminating. Unlike those traditional products, MiraFoil® coatings are fully recyclable and UV-curable. Moreover, they cut waste, deliver brilliance equal to full board or stamping, and reduce the carbon footprint by eliminating lamination.

o "Flexible Packaging Adhesive Solutions" focuses on Henkel's LIOFOL® solventless laminating adhesives with Smart Cure technology. Like all solventless systems, adhesives with Smart Cure technology promote a clean environment, improve operational safety, and require less energy. But in addition to those benefits, Smart Cure technology helps speed curing time, so laminates can comply with food safety regulation in just 2-3 days*, compared to 10-15 with conventional adhesives.

o "Adhesive Solutions for Nonwovens" describes how adhesive users can optimize processes and enhance sustainability with Henkel's ProControl® system and Dispomelt® Cool adhesive. The patented ProControl® system provides dispensing volume per package in real time for optimized adhesive use. As a result, users can quantify the actual sustainability impact of reducing adhesive consumption while they reduce add-on variation and decrease scrap due to inaccurate add-on levels. A low-temperature hot melt, Dispomelt® Cool adhesive applies at operating temperatures of 250oF to 275oF, compared to 300oF to 350oF for traditional adhesives. As a result, this adhesive reduces energy consumption, enables thinner application films, and promotes extended equipment life based on less char buildup and equipment wear and tear.

o "Packaging Adhesive Technologies" provides insights on six Henkel offerings that promote sustainability: 1) The EASY-PAC® system combines a low-temperature, char-free packaging hot melt with integrated auto-feed and dispense equipment, thereby reducing adhesive use, scrap and part consumption. 2) Technomelt® COOL adhesive is a low application-temperature, high-performance packaging hot melt that saves energy, reduces equipment wear, and allows less adhesive use. 3) Technomelt® Supra high-performance metallocene-based packaging hot melt has flow properties and bond strength that can reduce adhesive consumption up to 50%. In addition, it is clean running and char-resistant, which greatly reduces processing wear and scrap. 4) Euromelt® hot melt labeling adhesives run at lower temperatures, saving energy. Aggressive tack allows customers to use thinner grade PET in their bottles, and Euromelt® packaging eliminates the use of plastic trays often found in PSA hot melts. 5) Technomelt® Supra palletizing products can eliminate the need for shrink wrap and slip sheets because they enable application of small quantities of adhesives between packages. 6) As explained in the previous paragraph, the patented Procontrol® system provides dispensing volume per package in real time. As a result, users can quantify the actual sustainability impact of reducing adhesive consumption with EASY-PAC®, Technomelt® COOL, or Technomelt® Supra technologies. The ProControl® system can also be line-integrated for quality control and virtual elimination of scrap or waste from the case/carton sealing operation.

o "Construction & Wood Adhesive Technologies" describes how Henkel's products can reduce VOCs, improve productivity, save energy, enhance quality, and improve durability. Four Henkel product families are featured: 1) Purbond® one-component, moisture-curing liquid polyurethane adhesive system creates innovative structural and non-structural wood products. 2) Purfect Glaze® one-component hot melt systems cure with moisture to provide immediate green strength and accelerated cure for difficult-to-bond profiles. 3) Dorus® products, which include EPI, VAE, PVA, and PUR technologies, satisfy woodworking, edge/face/gluing, edge banding, profile wrapping, finger joint, and laminating needs. 4) Bondrite, Formica®, Hybond®, and Permqgrip® contact adhesives are GREENGUARD certified products that meet high pressure laminating needs.
