Manufacturers: Increased Global Demand for Energy Presents Opportunity for U.S.

Annual Industry Study Shows Oil, Gas and Coal Continue To Dominate U.S. Energy Portfolio

WASHINGTON, D.C. - National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President and CEO Jay Timmons issued this statement today following ExxonMobil's release of its Energy Outlook:

"Manufacturers have led the way in advancing a comprehensive national energy strategy that embraces all forms of domestic production and expands the efficiency and conservation efforts we already practice. Today's report by ExxonMobil not only demonstrates the opportunity for continued U.S. leadership that will lead to job creation and economic growth but also helps us maintain our competitive edge in the ever-growing global marketplace.

President Obama is right, there is much opportunity in energy - but it is a huge mistake to ignore the fact that we will need our current and vast energy supplies for decades to come. The federal government can work with business to unleash the innovative potential that already exists, creating jobs immediately and solidifying America's energy leadership well into the future.

Instead, President Obama is calling for policies that pick winners and losers and pit industry sectors against each other in order to achieve our goals. As a result, American consumers and businesses will see higher energy costs and government overregulation. As the unemployment rate remains close to double digits, it is absolutely critical for manufacturers to have access to affordable, reliable and secure energy supplies - which are essential to economic growth and job creation.

To remain competitive, manufacturers firmly believe we need to enact policies now to make us the best country in the world to headquarter a business, to do the bulk of a company's research and development and to manufacture and serve as an export platform. We look forward to working with both the Obama Administration and Congress to achieve these high goals and keep manufacturing in the U.S. strong."
