NEW CHE International Quench Tank is Eco-Friendly and Cost Effective

Anaheim, CA — Quenching metals can be a hazardous, environmentally unfriendly process, as the quenchant, which is typically oil-based, brings with it a number of environmental liabilities, including fumes, fire hazards and the detrimental results of leaks and spills, in addition to high insurance premiums and disposal costs.

By replacing the oil quenchant in the tanks they manufacture with a polyalkylene glycol mixture, CHE International (www.chefurnace.com) can better meet the needs of their customers from environmental, safety and cost perspectives.

Introducing this green quenchant into a tank allows CHE customers to develop safer manufacturing processes while more easily meeting the environmental requirements of their states. In addition, CHE customers using this quenchant save money, as glycol is less hazardous and less flammable than oil and disposing of the resulting glycol/water mixture is less expensive than disposing of the oil bi-products.

Thermal Modification Technologies (http://www.thermalmodtech.com/), a commercial heat treater in Portland, Oregon, was CHE’s first client to incorporate the quenchant into a new quench tank. Unable to easily move their existing oil-based quench tank to a new location, they approached CHE for help. CHE designed and fabricated a tank that met their short turnaround and included the new quenchant. Thermal has been using the new tank since late March 2013 and have been enthusiastic about the results.

“We are excited that Thermal Modification Technologies chose to work with us and that we were able to incorporate this safe quenchant into their new quench tank,” says John Tittelfitz, CHE president. “These polymer quenchants are environmentally friendly, better alternatives to oil quenching, and we look forward to incorporating them into additional tanks for our clients going forward.”
