New 1,600-Page Reference Guide to Rolling Bearings Now Available

A new, extended and updated rolling bearing guide is now available from Schaeffler UK, and includes more than 40,000 different products, providing design engineers with the ultimate technical reference guide to rolling bearings.

The Schaeffler Group has published a revised and extended version of its main HR1 rolling bearing catalogue. Now extended to more than 1,600 pages, the catalogue provides information about the features, dimensions and load ratings of more than 40,000 standard Schaeffler products, as well as rolling bearing accessories and other product variants. New sections have also been added on balls, needle rollers and cylindrical rollers as rolling elements.

Rapid ongoing developments in rolling bearing technology at Schaeffler have meant a revision of the first edition of the catalogue was required. Important changes include updated bearing rating life calculations and other performance data; updated friction factors and increases in operating temperature; updated lubrication overview, including new information on Schaeffler's Arcanol rolling bearing greases in use; new information on Schaeffler's high performance Cronitect steel for bearings; additional sizes and designs of bearings; and new bearing systems and components for Fluid Technology, Food and Packaging applications have also been added to the guide.

The 'Technical Principles' section of the catalogue now includes expanded and adjusted bearing rating life data in accordance with ISO 281:2007. In some cases, the performance data (basic load ratings, fatigue limit load, limiting speed and reference speed) of bearing products have been recalculated. Bearing factors (friction and increases in temperature) for tapered roller bearings and self-aligning ball bearings have also been updated.

Additional sizes and designs of Schaeffler's premium quality X-life bearings have been added, including new cylindrical roller bearings, tapered roller bearings, spherical roller bearings and axial spherical roller bearings.

A section on equipment and services for the mounting and maintenance of rolling bearings now includes Schaeffler's new online condition monitoring system, FAG ProCheck.

Since it was first published in 2006, more than 140,000 copies of the first edition have been distributed. This illustrates the importance and usefulness of the catalogue to engineers as a basic source of information and as a reference guide for all technical aspects of rolling bearings.

More than 150 pages of the catalogue are now devoted to the technical principles of rolling bearings, helping design engineers to size and select the appropriate bearings for their intended application. The 'technical principles' section includes information on fatigue theory; dynamic and static load carrying capacities of bearings; variable loads and speeds; life ratings; rigidity and deflection; friction values; limiting speeds and thermally safe operating speeds; lubrication principles; design of bearing arrangements; and information on fitting and dismantling.

The guide helps engineers decide which factors need to be considered at the design stage, as well as which tolerances any adjacent assemblies should provide and how the various bearings can be effectively sealed. The guide provides detailed information on bearing service life calculations, temperatures and load carrying capacities and also explains which lubricants are best suited to different bearing types and how these bearings should be mounted and maintained.

Other parts of the catalogue cover the various types of rolling bearings, including cylindrical, tapered, spherical and needle roller bearings; track rollers; ball bearings and angular contact ball bearings; bearings for screw drives; insert bearings (housed units); spindle bearings; drawn cup needle roller bearings; bearing housings and accessories.

The new HR1 catalogue is available in various languages, including German, English and Italian. A Spanish version will be published before the end of March 2009. Chinese, Russian and other European and Asian languages are also under way.
