NESCC Webinar to Educate Nuclear Standards Community on Conformity Assessment

The Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative (NESCC) has announced a free webinar that will provide an introduction to conformity assessment for individuals currently examining the standards and conformance-related needs of the nuclear power industry. The webinar will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
NESCC is a joint initiative of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) to identify and respond to the current needs of the nuclear industry. The group, which met for the first time on June 1, 2009, is a cross-stakeholder forum to facilitate and coordinate the timely identification, development, and revision of standards for the design, operation, development, licensing, and deployment of nuclear power plants and other nuclear technologies.

The webinar will provide NESCC participants and other members of the nuclear standards community with an overview of the conformity assessment system in the U.S. Conformity assessment is a demonstration that specified requirements relating to a product, process, system, person, or body are fulfilled. It can include sampling and testing, inspection, supplier's declaration of conformity, certification, and management system assessment, and registration. Conformity assessment also includes accreditation of the competence of those activities by a third party and recognition (usually by a government agency) of an accreditation program's capability.

Attendees of the webinar will hear from three experts in the area of conformity assessment: Lane Hallenbeck, ANSI vice president of accreditation services; Gordon Gillerman, chief of the NIST Standards Services Division; and Kevin Ennis, director of nuclear codes and standards for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Participation in the webinar is free of charge, but advance registration is required. To register, click here. For more information about the webinar or NESCC, contact Ambler Thompson, Ph.D., (ambler@nist.gov, 301.975.2333) or Sally Seitz (sseitz@ansi.org; 212.642.4918).
