NEMA Publishes NEMA ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2015 Magnet Wire

ROSSLYN, Va., —The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2015 Magnet Wire. MW 1000 is the world’s premier standards publication for general requirements, product specifications, and test procedures for the manufacture and packaging of magnet wire.

MW 1000 is continually developed and maintained by the NEMA Magnet Wire Section Technical Committee to ensure that specifications and test procedures reflect evolving magnet wire end user requirements, and state-of-the-art magnet wire manufacturing technologies. The standard is approved as an American National Standard through an accredited canvass of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

MW 1000 is designed to present, in concise and convenient form, all existing NEMA standards for magnet wire, including standards for round, rectangular, and square film-insulated and/or fibrous-covered copper and aluminum magnet wire. It contains the definitions, type designations, dimensions, constructions, performance, and test methods for magnet wire generally used in the winding of coils for electrical apparatus.

Major changes from the last edition include:

removing the MW 29-C specification;

removing the use of mercury from test procedures;

harmonizing elongation requirements with IEC 60317-0-1;

clarifying the general provisions of the dielectric breakdown test procedures;

adding a new test procedure for transformer oil resistance and hydrolytic stability testing of film-insulated rectangular magnet wire;

adding a new elevated temperature bond test procedure;

adding new specifications MW 64-A,Aromatic Polyimide Tape Covered Bare Rectangular and Square Aluminum Magnet Wire Thermal Class 240, and MW 65-A for round wire constructions; and

adding new specification MW 85-C, Zero-Defect Fully Insulated Winding Wire, which adopts the requirements of specification sheet IEC 60317-56.

MW 1000 may be downloaded or purchased in hard copy for $145 on the NEMA website. Additional information about MW 1000 can be found at www.MW1000.com.
