Institute Board Approves NBIMS Rules of Governance

The buildingSMART alliance's Project Committee now has official Rules of Governance to follow when developing the National Building Information Modeling Standard - United States(TM) (NBIMS), Version 2. The National Institute of Building Sciences Board of Directors approved the Rules during its September Board meeting, completing the last step in a months-long process to set the structure for the standard.

The NBIMS Rules of Governance establish the procedures for the development of the standard and the parameters of the revision process.

"The issuing of the Rules of Governance marks a major milestone of the National Building Information Modeling Standard - United States(TM) as we continue our work to complete the first open consensus BIM standard before the end of 2011," said David Morris, Chair of the NBIMS Project Committee.

The NBIMS Rules of Governance set the overall scope of the standard; procedures for the development and revision process; and provide deadlines, formats and logistics for getting the standard completed and published on schedule.

A key component of the Rules is the quick turnaround of developing the standard itself. The Rules establishes a development and review process that is anticipated to occur on a six-month revision cycle, ensuring that this free, open standard remains in tune with the latest technologies.

The buildingSMART alliance, a council of the Institute, develops NBIMS. The purpose of the standard is to advance the art and science of the entire lifecycle of the vertical and horizontal built environment by providing a means of organizing and classifying electronic object data and thereby fostering streamlined communication among owners, designers, material suppliers, constructors, facility managers and all stakeholders associated with the built environment.
