NAM Comments on FCC Proposed Rulemaking on Broadband Industry Practices
NAM Backs Market-Based Solutions to Encourage Investment and Job Growth
WASHINGTON, D.C, Oct. 22, 2009 - The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Director of Technology Policy Mark-Anthony Signorino issued the following statement commenting on today's proposed rulemaking by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Internet policies relating to the full deployment of broadband.
We are pleased the Commission is working to ensure that an open Internet is available to all Americans including manufacturers, employees and consumers alike. Manufacturers in rural, unserved and underserved areas need the same opportunity as manufacturers in urban areas to access high-speed Internet services.
However, we are concerned the FCC's regulations will threaten investment in innovation, thus delaying broadband deployment to the areas of our country that desperately need it -- delays that could threaten the ability of manufacturers to create jobs and compete in the global marketplace. We are also concerned that these proposed rules are not evenly applied across the Internet spectrum, from those who manage and maintain the networks to those who create applications and services that reside on the network.
We will continue to work with the FCC to ensure that the right combination of market incentives and consumer-oriented principles are adopted to help spur innovation, broadband deployment and job creation in the United States.
