NACD Members Continue to Reduce Emissions

Earlier this week, the Environmental Protection Agency reported that the chemical distribution industry stands alone with the apparel industry, as the industries with the lowest average release of toxic emissions per facility. This information is part of the just-published U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2008 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Public Data Release Report.

According to the EPA's report, chemical distribution companies reported an average release of toxic emissions per facility approximately 75% less than the textiles industry, and 90% less than the plastics and rubber industry. NACD member companies, through their participation in the Responsible Distribution ProcessSM (RDP), had a per facility disposal average that was 18 % less than non-NACD member companies.

"EPA's report clearly demonstrates the success of the NACD's Responsible Distribution ProcessSM, the Association's mandatory health, safety, security, and environmental management practice," said NACD President Christopher Jahn. "We have proven recently that RDP leads to safer highways and working conditions1, and now are pleased to see EPA's report confirm that NACD member companies have been leaders in protecting the environment.

As Congress continues to debate issues that could have an enormous impact on the future of the chemical distribution industry, like Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) reform or chemical security legislation, we urge lawmakers to look towards EPA's TRI report as one of many examples where NACD member companies, through RDP, have demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental protection, as well as the health and safety of our nation's citizens."

NACD and its nearly 250 members have established themselves as leaders in health, safety, security, and environmental performance through implementation of the Responsible Distribution Process (RDP), established in 1991 as a condition of membership in NACD. Incorporated as a condition of membership in January 1999, NACD members undergo third-party on-site RDPV - RDP Verification. For additional information, visit NACD's Web site - www.nacd.com.
