Micron Creep-Feed-Grinder: High Performance CBN-Rotor Grinding on Micron Machines

The New Micron Macro-S Achieves up to a 30% Reduction in Cycle Time Compared with Competitors' Grinding Processes

RENDSBURG, Germany - Peter Wolters GmbH, a manufacturer of high-precision machine tools headquartered in Rendsburg, Germany, today announced the release of its new MICRON Macro-S tool for CBN rotor grinding.

Gerotors are used widely today throughout the industry, and are produced in a variety of shapes and sizes by a number of different methods. In gerotor manufacturing, the most economical way to achieve the tight tolerances and surface quality of the outer contour of the finished rotor is to use creep-feed-grinding. The Micron business unit of Peter Wolters has now successfully completed its first acceptance of a Macro-S for CBN rotor grinding. CBN creep-feed-grinding requires an extremely sturdy and rigid machine as the normal forces are much higher compared to grinding with conventional wheels.

The Macro-S design with its concrete-filled base guarantees an extremely torsion-resistant machine bed, despite its small 1.5 meter width. The Macro-S demonstrates that a small footprint and high stock removal rate are not exclusive to each other. As the interface between the machine and the work piece, the fixture plays a decisive role, delivering absolute accuracy and allowing for high stock removal rates.

One significant factor contributing to a successful process control is the accurate positioning of the work piece, allowing for precision grinding of the outer contour of the rotors. The Macro-S uses a high-precision index table from a European manufacturer. This index table, in combination with a high resolution angular measurement system, is able to position the rotor with an accuracy of under 0.5ì.

The compact and rigid build-up of the Macro-S, in combination with the sophisticated fixture design, achieves an approximately 30% reduction in cycle time compared to the competitors' grinding processes. Micron creep-feed-grinding technology is therefore the right choice for rotor grinding whenever high efficiency and accuracy are required.
