Michael D. Lewis Receives ASTM International Walter C. Voss Award

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 21 January 2009-ASTM International has honored Michael D. Lewis, president of Facade Forensics Inc. in Cincinnati, Ohio, with the 2008 Walter C. Voss Award for his outstanding contributions to knowledge and advances in the field of building technology. Lewis was cited "for distinguished contributions to knowledge in the field of dimension stone and its application, in particular, performance of anchoring systems for dimension stone."
Lewis, who joined ASTM International in 1989, is an active member of Committee C18 on Dimension Stone, where he is a past secretary and vice chair. He participates on several C18 subcommittees and has served as chair of Subcommittee C18.06 on Attachment Components and Systems since 1991. In addition to his work with C18, he works on Committees C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units and E06 on Performance of Buildings.
A graduate of the University of Cincinnati where he earned both a bachelor's degree in architecture and a master's degree in structural engineering, Lewis specializes in building envelope design and rehabilitation. Throughout his career, he has assessed, rehabilitated or constructed over $700 million worth of facades on new and existing buildings and provides expert witness testimony to resolve construction and contract matters. He regularly participates in technical seminars and symposia and he has written several papers and articles in his field, including ASTM Manual 21, Modern Stone Cladding, Design and Installation of Exterior Dimension Stone Systems.
An adjunct assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati's School of Architecture and Interior Design where he has taught since 1989, Lewis started his consulting business Facade Forensics Inc. in 2002. Outside of ASTM International, Lewis is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the International Code Council, the Masonry Society and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
