Leadership 101

Five critical skills that material handling leaders must have

Dewitt, NY - November 16, 2009: The November issue of MHEDA Edge focuses on leadership. Now, more than ever, strong leadership is of paramount importance in the business world. The waters are extremely rough and if your company doesn't have the right people steering the ship, it could be in big trouble. That's why the November Edge's article, "Leadership 101: Five things every leader should be doing," is so important.

Not everyone is born a leader, but anyone can become one. There are 1,001 leadership strategies out there if you're willing to read all of the books. Many a career has been made out of teaching others the "secrets to successful leadership." That's not to say there's no validity to those strategies, but there are simpler steps to take. In that spirit, MHEDA Edge has scoured many of these strategies and boiled it down to five simple skills that any aspiring leader should develop.

The five skills are as follows:

o Have Vision-To be a true leader, you must be able to see beyond the minutiae of day-to-day activities.

o Show Confidence in Your Abilities-A leader must show confidence in themselves in order to earn the confidence of others.

o Lead By Example-Demand greatness from yourself, not just your employees.

o Be Firm and Fair-Don't hesitate to put weight on the shoulders of your employees, but be ready to lend a hand if it becomes too much.

o Care-Your job isn't just a paycheck and your employees aren't just productivity numbers.

To find out more about these strategies and how to implement them, be sure to check out MHEDA Edge (www.mhedaedge.org), the online resource for young professionals in the forklift, storage and handling, conveyor and general material handling industries.
