Material Handling Distributors Adapt to "Changing Rules"

Distributors relate real-life examples of new, innovative business strategies.

Dewitt, NY - The Rules Have Changed. So goes the theme for MHEDA's 55th Annual Convention and Exhibitors' Showcase, which kicks off Saturday, May 1, in Marco Island, FL. To commemorate this theme, the Second Quarter 2010 issue of The MHEDA Journal (http://themhedajournal.org), the leading online magazine for the forklift, storage and handling, and general material handling equipment industries, features case studies from eight MHEDA distributors, discussing the strategies they've implemented at their companies to drive profits during the recent industry-wide economic downturn.

The last two years have been a wake-up call for many people in the material handling industry. In many cases, the economic slump has caused less purchasing, extended payment cycles, and even bankruptcies. It has affected material handling distributors' customers and their customers' customers. There's a "new normal" in the business environment, and the rules that govern that behavior have changed. What can distributors do to adjust?

That's what the Second Quarter issue of The MHEDA Journal is all about. Eight material handling distributors, from companies large and small, are changing the way they do business and making things happen. The strategies these savvy businesspeople are employing:

o Implementing lean operations

o Focusing on rental and used equipment

o Becoming a dual-line forklift distributor

o Embracing social media and encouraging their use

o Selling more automation-ready equipment

o Pushing "green" strategies

o Enforcing stricter credit policies

o Revamping parts delivery techniques.

These are only a few of the potential ways that material handling distributors can operate in a new environment where the traditional rules of business have changed. It's all in this special Second Quarter issue of The MHEDA Journal, accessible online at www.TheMhedaJournal.org. The MHEDA Journal is published quarterly, in January, April, July and October.
