Making A Material Handling Acquisition

The story of one forklift distributor's decision to form a new company.

Dewitt, NY - The Fourth Quarter 2010 issue of The MHEDA Journal, the leading online magazine for the forklift, storage & handling, and general material handling equipment industries, features an article about the decisions that go into making an acquisition. Lift truck distributor Duncan Murphy, president of Riekes Equipment (Omaha, NE) and 2009 MHEDA President, outlines considerations that a company must make when pursuing a company to acquire.

Murphy talks about all the different elements that went into his company's acquisition of Bublitz Machinery in Kansas City, Missouri, including the financial circumstances that led to the deal, developing a company culture, employee retention and more. "The single biggest piece of advice I can give is that nothing is as easy as it looks," Murphy writes. "It will take time to raise performance to match your goals. It will take time for the culture to become embedded. Given that, make sure you are adequately capitalized to give yourself the time it will take. It also takes a lot of mental and physical energy, so be prepared for the drag on you and your staff."

This is just one of the many pieces of valuable advice offered in "Making An Acquisition," in the October 2010 issue of The MHEDA Journal. The full text of the article is available at The MHEDA Journal Online at www.TheMhedaJournal.org. The print version of The MHEDA Journal is mailed out to subscribers in January, April, July and October.
