Choosing The Right Pallet Rack

MHEDA member offers advice on selecting the correct type of pallet rack for any application.

Dewitt, NY - As part of its continued focus on providing young material handling professionals with useful and relevant information that will help them improve job performance, the January issue of MHEDA Edge features an article titled "Choosing The Right Pallet Rack For Your Customer," by Donald Heemstra.

In his article, Heemstra, who is director of marketing for Steel King Industries (Stevens Point, WI), discusses which applications are practical for used pallet rack and which require new rack. Heemstra points out that, especially in this challenging economy, many end-users are tempted to save a little money by purchasing used pallet rack. While in many instances this is a perfectly viable option, that's not always the case. Used rack often has limitations that can cause trouble for a customer down the line. As a distributor, it's your obligation to closely analyze your customer's application and figure out which type of rack will work for them. So when does it make sense to buy old versus new pallet rack?

In general, used storage rack can make sense for your customer when it's in decent condition, it's relatively new and the application is located in a non-seismic situation. Basically, used rack is best suited for an application that just needs uprights and beams, not a specialized system. Seismic map changes and stricter requirements make it more important than ever for you to be looking out for your customers, regardless of their geographic location.
