Meritor LogixDrive(TM) Uses Electronic Intelligence for Ultimate Axle Efficiency

HANNOVER, Germany -- Meritor, Inc. (NYSE: MTOR) is displaying LogixDrive(TM), the first intelligent axle system, at the IAA Hannover Commercial Vehicle Show.

Meritor's LogixDrive actively "thinks" using a performance logic system, which is enabled by an electronic control unit with dedicated sensors measuring speed, braking and torque to optimize axle efficiency. Additionally, the LogixDrive system utilizes the Meritor lube management system to actively apply or reduce axle lubrication based on current truck performance and driving conditions.

"LogixDrive is an example of Meritor's forward-thinking and focus on product innovation that leads to fuel savings and improved efficiency," said Joe Elbehairy, vice president, Engineering, Meritor. "LogixDrive bundles technologies in one system. It provides customers with efficiency gains by optimizing the system using an electronically controlled, fail-safe design."

LogixDrive addresses the two main areas of power loss in axles: gear and bearing friction and oil churning due to gear rotation. Adding or reducing lubricant on the gear set during the vehicle's operation improves efficiency and fuel savings, as well as reduces lubrication breakdown.

"LogixDrive employs sensors to measure oil temperature and combines that with torque and speed information to reduce lubrication in high-speed/low-torque conditions or increase lubrication in low-speed/high-torque conditions," said Marco Bassi, senior director, Engineering, Meritor. "Meritor's engineers employ advanced controls to develop intelligent axles that display tangible customer benefits."

Bassi notes that LogixDrive can increase fuel savings from 0.5 to 0.8 percent without any need for a driver interface, and boasts parasitic energy loss reductions of up to 50 percent compared with previous generation axles.
