Medical Group Eases the Pain of Health Records Management Using EMC Technology and Services

University of Miami Medical Group Transitions Toward Electronic Health Record System by Leveraging EMC® Documentum® ApplicationXtender® Platform

HOPKINTON, Mass., Nov. 8 -- EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced that University of Miami Clinical Enterprise Technologies (UMCET) is using the EMC® Documentum® ApplicationXtender® software suite to transition the University of Miami Medical Group to an electronic medical record system. Using EMC technology, services and support, UMCET created a hybrid medical record system to manage both paper and electronic documents and patient records. Physicians and hospital staff benefit from a unified platform that aggregates, manages and archives all paper and electronic patient information, and presents it via an intuitive user interface customized to meet their needs.

The University of Miami Medical Group includes more than 800 physicians across a dozen South Florida hospitals and other locations. As the first step toward an electronic medical record (EMR) system, UMCET teamed with EMC services and support to create a customized health record management system built upon the EMC ApplicationXtender document management platform. Patient data, medical records, clinical notes, lab reports and other electronic information are received from the hospitals' registration systems, transcription systems and other applications. The electronic data is then integrated with paper clinical charts that are scanned and indexed at the point of care. UMCET uses ApplicationXtender to manage the clinical documentation and EMC DiskXtender® to archive the scanned images.

"We were challenged to improve our current EMR and in doing so, needed a partner that would react quickly to our needs," said Oscar Perez, IT Director at UMCET. "EMC delivered on this need, and provided us with a reliable platform on which we built a customized solution for our physician community that fits well within their routine business practices."

Using ApplicationXtender Web Services API, UMCET built an intuitive user interface that resulted in widespread adoption by physicians -- a critical challenge often faced in the medical community when transitioning to an EMR. Web-based access to the clinical repository now allows physicians at any location to access electronic patient charts using an Internet browser. With faster, easier access to patient information, physicians and staff can provide better care for clients.

By having ApplicationXtender Web Services API installed, UMCET implemented a highly-customized user interface with advanced sorting and filtering capabilities -- making it easy for doctors to gather information about patients and quickly learn where they have been treated in the past and what treatments were performed. Additionally, the ApplicationXtender platform allows the medical group to manage the many different parts of a health record while ensuring the security of private patient information, consistent with the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

Martin Hadida, Manager and Lead Software Developer, Enterprise Integration Office at UMCET said, "EMC is a strong leader in the content management industry and their tools have been easy to customize and extend to suit a variety of different needs. As a software developer, I appreciate how EMC has kept up with emerging technologies such as Web services."

UMCET won the 2006 Excellence in IT Leadership Award for the State of Florida for the hybrid medical record system it created using the ApplicationXtender software platform. The group plans to expand the system to additional sites and teaching hospitals throughout the state of Florida.

"UMCET is a great example of how organizations can leverage EMC's content management and archiving solutions as a critical part of their information infrastructure," said Mark Lewis, President, Content Management and Archiving Division at EMC. "We are pleased that, in such a short amount of time, UMCET was able to build an award-winning medical record system using the advanced document management and archiving capabilities of EMC software, coupled with our premier services and support."
