Material Handling Distributors Can Benefit From Eco-Conscious Customers

The MHEDA Journal discusses encouraging end-users to go green.

Dewitt, NY - The MHEDA Journal Online (http://www.TheMhedaJournal.org), is the leading online magazine for the forklift, conveyor, storage & handling, and general material handling equipment industries. The 2nd Quarter issue of the magazine is online now and features an article focusing on the green movement and how distributors and their customers can benefit from becoming eco-conscious.

Christine Corelli, president of Christine Corelli & Associates (Morton Grove, IL), says, "Until recently, businesses that took an active interest in environmental issues were few and far between. Determination to take on these concerns was often more talk and less action. Today, though, businesses in all industries realize that protecting the environment is a very real concern to businesses and the general population."

Sustainability awareness and a push toward green practices are on the rise. A global study of 11,000 consumers in the United States, United Kingdom, France, China, India, Brazil, Germany, Spain and Mexico showed that 80 percent of the world's consumers said they were attentive to, or absorbed by, sustainability issues. An estimated one billion people in more than 180 countries participated in Earth Day 2010.

Distributors who adopt green practices can have increased sales and profits, better marketing and public relations, lower operating costs and a positive reputation. "You may not be the first distributor to demonstrate environmental responsibility," Corelli says. "But you'd be wise to avoid being the last. This isn't a passing fancy that will go out of style in a few years. This is a new expectation that is here to stay."

Green practices are abundant in the material handling industry. Jeff Rufener, vice president of Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America and president of the Industrial Truck Administration, predicts that electric forklift demand will grow to 63 percent of the total market in 2011. "The trend toward electric forklifts has staying power not seen before," he says.
