Marine Robot Fleet Expands Research Horizons

Robots Perform Unattended Data Capture in the Ocean

CHESTERLAND OH — In a BBC News article released last week, a UK marine RD institution is funding an ambitious project which is launching a fleet of marine robots! These autonomous systems comprise a fleet consisting of seven unmanned submersibles in a new project headed by the United Kingdom's National Oceanography Centre. Pending the project's success, the British government is considering using unmanned craft to continually monitor the surrounding ocean and to perform marine data collection. As a solutions provider of automated monitoring systems, we at CAS DataLoggers provide businesses and organizations around the world with weather and environmental monitoring devices. Take advantage of automatic data collection today!

The UK's National Oceanography Centre is a marine science research and technology institution for integrated sea level science and ocean research and development. Their project's goal is to test the robots' performance and to record data on marine life in a busy fishing area. The fleet will travel 300 miles across an ocean area located southwest of the UK.

Traditionally ocean data has been collected by research ships, buoys and satellites, but they can't cover a large area and ships' crews are costly. In contrast, these marine robots are designed to provide far-ranging data collection at a much lower cost.

Four different types of marine drones are being deployed into the ocean front between the Atlantic and the English Channel. Some are powered by solar panels, others by wind turbines and diesel motors, and other units can send data and receive new instructions via satellite. Two of these robots are new devices designed to operate for months using ‘green' energy including wind and wave power.

Equipped with an array of weather and environmental sensors to record data, the remote units are also outfitted with cameras to record footage of marine life. Deployment is scheduled to end at the end of October, at which point the vehicles will be collected from the waves and operators will examine the data in detail.

The fleet's launch may herald a new era of unmanned ocean exploration--for example in the near future it may be commonplace to see drones collecting data for more accurate weather forecasts.

BBC News quotes Chief scientist Dr. Russell Wynn: "This is the first time we've deployed this range of vehicles carrying all these instruments. The ability to measure the temperature or the weather at the ocean surface, or dolphins and seabirds with the cameras on the vehicles--noone's ever been able to do that at the same time hundreds of miles from the shore. At the moment a lot of decisions about how we manage the oceans are based on very few data…we actually have very little information on that."
