Manufacturers: Coal Is a Valuable Resource to the Marketplace
Legislation Will Rein in Regulations That Drive up Energy Costs and Cause Uncertainty
Washington, D.C., – National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President and CEO Jay Timmons issued this statement in support of the Stop the War on Coal Act (H.R. 3409):
“Manufacturers fully support this important bill as it will halt costly and burdensome new regulations. Coal is a vital part of our efforts to meet our energy needs. It is one of the nation’s most abundant energy resources and generates a significant percentage of our nation’s electricity.
This legislation also requires the Environmental Protection Agency to do a comprehensive analysis of the onerous Utility MACT and Boiler MACT regulations that would harm manufacturers. We continue to be astounded by the amount of new regulations that are aimed at manufacturers. A recent report from MAPI found that manufacturers have been subjected to more than 2,000 regulations that have been imposed over the past three decades.
In August, manufacturers lost 15,000 jobs in another disappointing month for job creation. Job growth has come to a halt, and we are already feeling the effects of new regulations. America’s job creators cannot afford for Washington to continue to pick winners and losers. Manufacturers consume one-third of our nation’s energy supply, making it essential that we adopt an ‘all-of-the-above’ energy strategy that includes all energy sources to help reduce costs and improve our global competitiveness.”
