Manufacturers Encouraged by FCC's National Broadband Plan

Expanding Broadband Will Generate Economic Opportunities

WASHINGTON, D.C., - The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President John Engler issued the following statement after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released its National Broadband Plan:

"We are pleased to see the FCC put forth its comprehensive broadband plan that aims to increase broadband accessibility and speed to a wide population including manufacturers and consumers in rural areas. Manufacturers' access to high-speed voice, video and data provides limitless opportunities for advancing innovation and job creation.

Advances in technology have been responsible for a robust U.S. economy and strengthening manufacturing sectors across the board. Manufacturers recognize the critical need to promote policies that support a world-class telecommunications system.

Expanding our broadband infrastructure will undoubtedly create economic opportunity while connecting underserved communities to critical services. The NAM commissioned a report by the independent and respected Milken Institute entitled Jobs for America: Investments and Policies for Economic Growth and Competitiveness (www.milkeninstitute.org), which shows that making significant investments in broadband will create over a million jobs in construction to telecommunications services and would lead to increased forms of productivity among businesses, while improving speed and connectivity across the nation.

We thank FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and Blair Levin, executive director of the National Broadband Taskforce, for their leadership and look forward to reviewing the details of this comprehensive plan. We will also continue to work with the FCC and Congress on seeking ways to encourage incentives through this plan that will enable the private sector to make investments that will create long-term jobs and make American workers and businesses more competitive in a global economy."

The National Association of Manufacturers is the nation's largest industrial trade association, representing manufacturers in every industrial sector and in all 50 states. Manufacturing has a presence in every single congressional district providing good, high-paying jobs. For more information about the Manufacturers, visit www.nam.org.
