Manufacturers Call on Senate to Send Customs Bill to President
Washington, D.C. – National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President and CEO Jay Timmons issued the following statement ahead of a vote today by the U.S. Senate to end debate and proceed to final passage on the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015, long-awaited, widely supported legislation that would update and improve U.S. customs and border policies:
“The Senate should waste no more time and send this customs bill to the president’s desk. If senators want to grow manufacturing in the United States, then they should pass this bill immediately. Our nation’s current customs and border policies are costing manufacturers billions of dollars each year and putting us at a competitive disadvantage. By streamlining procedures that will cut red tape and facilitate legitimate trade, this bill would provide one of the most concrete improvements to our customs and border policies in over a decade.
“With 95 percent of the world’s customers living outside the United States, trade is essential to creating opportunity and securing jobs here at home. Passage of this bill would be a major step in the right direction toward helping manufacturers reach new customers and sell our products in new markets.”
