Mahr Federal to Introduce GMX 400 Universal Gear Tester at IMTS 2008

Along With MarSurf® WS 1 Optical Surface Metrology System, Air Gages for Tapers, and the Digimar® 817 CLM Height Measuring Instrument

PROVIDENCE, RI - At IMTS 2008, Mahr Federal will introduce the GMX 400, a new Class 1 Universal Gear Tester that provides fast, accurate analysis for a wide range of gear and gear tool applications on gears with ODs up to 400 mm (15.75 in). The company will also feature its new MarSurf® WS 1 Optical Surface Metrology System; its innovative line of Air Gaging products for machine tool holders, taper tooling and spindles; and the new Digimar® 817 CLM Height Measuring Instrument. Mahr Federal will occupy booth #D-4324 at IMTS 2008, McCormick Place, Chicago, IL, September 8-13.

Part of the Mahr Federal GMX Series, and incorporating a 4-axis Power PC controller with automatic tailstock and a high-accuracy 3-D scanning probe head, the GMX 400 provides an excellent solution for both universal and specialized gear manufacturing processes. Equipped for both stand-alone shop floor or gear lab applications, the GMX 400 provides fully automatic inspection of straight and helical cylindrical gears; spiral and hypoid bevel gears; crown gears; cylindrical worm shafts; conical cylindrical gears; segment gears; shaving cutters and hobs; pinion-shaped cutters; beveloid gears; synchronous gears; 3D geometry; and form and positional measurements, diameters and distances.

Mahr Federal has also expanded its offerings in the world of optical surface metrology with the introduction of the MarSurf WS 1. Utilizing white light interferometry in a compact design, the MarSurf WS 1 offers vertical resolution of 0.1 nm (.004 µin) and provides three-dimensional measurement in only a few seconds. Utilizing MarSurf XT 20 topographical evaluation software, the space-saving MarSurf WS 1 can be configured to work both in the lab and on the shop floor.

The white light optical sensor in the MarSurf WS 1 enables the rapid, high-precision recording of surface topography on a wide range of materials. Using white light and a CCD camera, the system is able to collect height information through the field of view of the camera. Both the test surface area and a high-precision reference surface built into the objective lens are imaged simultaneously by the camera. During measurement, the Mirau objective is moved in small steps in the Z direction, using a piezo positioner. The resultant interferograms are recorded as image stacks and converted into height data.

Mahr Federal will also showcase examples of air gaging for machine tool tapers along with their popular line of Air Gaging systems, including the Dimensionair®, µDimensionair, and the new Millimar C1245. The Millimar C1245 allows for the high performance display of multiple diameters and tapers simultaneously. This allows a single master air gage system to use two-master air gage tooling if the customer desires.

Tapers are critical in the performance of high speed machining applications. The ability of air gaging to incorporate multiple gaging points in a small tool makes it ideal for checking tapers for size and taper angle. Air gaging provides a fast and accurate means to measure and verify holders and spindles right at the point of manufacture.

Mahr Federal's new Digimar 817 CLM Height Measuring Instrument offers three distinct ways to initiate measurement. In addition to normal keypad initiation, a Quick Mode feature allows the measurement cycle to be initiated by simply pushing the carriage in the direction of the object to be measured. Also, two Speed Keys on the base allow the operator to comfortably move the measuring carriage to the desired position and start a measurement. Combined with an easy-to-program Teach-In Mode, these features can greatly reduce inspection time for a mini series consisting of only a few test pieces.

The Digimar 817 CLM offers a wide range of measurement functions in both 1D and optional 2D, including dynamic measurement functions, perpendicularity, and straightness measurements. Data can be printed via a USB-connected printer, saved on integrated USB memory, or output for additional processing via an RS232-interface. Additional measuring instruments can also be connected with an Opto-RS232-interface.
